Choosing a Topic




Consider individual interests.
Browse current magazines or
news Web sites.
Explore topic ideas in the Library
catalog or databases.
Think about ways to narrow the
topic.

7
I think I
already have
a thesis…
There is no link between
teenagers watching
television and
committing real
violence.

Starting Research
Look for an overview of the subject
in:
Opposing Viewpoints (books)
 An encyclopedia (online or book)
 Issues & Controversies (database)
 CQ Researcher (database)


9
Jamie finds an article on the general topic
“television violence” in Issues &
Controversies.
For step-by-step instructions click here.

10
The Issues & Controversies article
is old, but it summarizes research
studies. Some support the thesis,
some don’t, and some focus on
children instead of teenagers.
Research isn’t
as easy as I
thought…
…but I’ll
keep trying!
I’ll see what
else the
Library has.

The Library Catalog


Use the Find Books... search box to
find items in the Library: books,
videos, etc.
When searching for a topic use the
SUBJECT search
and/or
KEYWORD search.

12
Jamie searches the Library
catalog for books and videos on
violence and television.

Search Tips




Make a list of keywords that describe
the topic. Use them as search terms.
Do not type whole sentences or
questions into the search box.
Try a SUBJECT search first.
Also do a KEYWORD search.

14
From the Library Catalog, print out
records for several items and find
them.

Look in the indexes of the books to
see which ones provide information to
support the thesis.

I need current
information to
support my thesis.
I’d better look
for some
articles.

Periodical Articles


Magazine, newspaper, and journal
articles can be found online in Library
databases/indexes or in print.
Databases may give full text, an
abstract (summary), or just a citation
of an article.

17
Using Library Databases to
Find Articles
Go to the Library Web site.
http://www.bergen.edu/library
Under Find Articles, click on Full List
of Databases to see a list of ALL the
databases.
OR
 Click on one of the Frequently Used
Databases.

General Databases
These databases have articles on
almost any topic:



Academic Search Premier
Academic OneFile (Infotrac)
ProQuest Research Library

Database Search Tips



Combine keywords using “and”:
television and violence and
teenagers.
Do not type whole sentences into the
search box.
Try different combinations of
keywords. For example, instead of
“teenagers” use “adolescents.”

20
I’m finding lots
of articles in
this database
called Academic
Search Premier.
For step-by-step instructions

I’ll scan titles and
abstracts and print
more than I need.
I can choose the
best articles later.

Internet Sources


Try a search engine such as Google.
Evaluate Web sites by answering
these questions:



What is the site’s purpose and what is
the source of the information ? (Look at
the URL.)
How does this information compare to
what is found elsewhere?
When was it last updated?

Web sites retrieved:

Evaluate the Web Sites:
What is
the Web
site’s
purpose?
How does this
information
compare to
what I found in
other sources?
What is the
source of the
information?
When was the
Web site last
updated?

25
After evaluating several Web sites,
Jamie decides that the APA
and Media Awareness Network are
reliable sources of information and prints
these documents.
