Transcript Welcome to the internet

Welcome to the internet
Its parts and how it works!
What is the Internet?
 The internet is simply
a bunch of computers
that are connected.
 These are not
ordinary computers
like the one you are
sitting at right now,
they are special…
What kind of computers are they?
 They are called Web server
computers
 A Web Server is simply a
computer that stores web
pages – yes, all those web pages
that you visit everyday on the web.
 Those web pages are stored
on their hard drives – just like you
might store your files on your
computer, someone has stored a web
page on their web server.
 There are many of these web
servers located all over the
world.
Process Check #1
The internet is simply a bunch of web
servers (that are storing all those web
pages on them) all over the world that
are connected so that they can
communicate with one another.
So, how are they all connected?
How are they all connected?
 They are all
connected because
each one is physically
plugged into or
attached to one of two
things:
A phone line
A cable line –like your
cable TV cable line
Yes, they are connected….
 Just like you can
make a phone call to
someone, computers
can communicate
with one another by
sending data or
information across
these phone or cable
lines.
Process Check #2 – The internet
The internet is simply
a bunch of web
servers all over the
world connected
by phone or cable
lines so that they
can share
information.
Assignment Part 1
 Open Publisher and on your poster, create
something that represents the internet.
 Make sure to:
Label your web server and provide a brief definition of
what it is.
Provide an explanation as to what is the internet (what
makes it up and how it works).
Use the tools available in Publisher – don’t just copy and paste
something from the internet.
You will have to be able to explain this to someone who
has never used the internet before and knows nothing
about it, so make it good.
I understand the internet – Now what?
 Well, we need to
know how to get
access to it…
 No, it is not magic nor
is it magically floating
around in your
computer.
 You need to call an
ISP…
What in the world is an ISP?
 ISP stands for “Internet
Service Provider”.
 Yep, you guessed it. It is
a company/business that
“provides” you with
“access” to the “internet”
 “Well, how do they
provide me with access to
the internet?” you ask…
How do I get access? – ISP continued
 ISPs own those web
servers. Somebody has to
own them, they don’t just grow
freely on trees….Duhhhh
 AOL, Time Warner Cable,
Net Zero, Yahoo, etc. are
all companies that own these web
servers.
 For a monthly fee, I can
get access to their web
servers.
 What do I get for this
“fee” that I pay them?
I had better get something good for this
“Fee”…
 You do, you get two things:
 software
 Modem
 A modem is a piece of
equipment that will allow your
computer to communicate with
all of these web servers.
 The software will tell your
modem how to dial up/connect
to the web servers at your ISP.
 The whole point is that you
need to be able to connect to
one of these web servers on
the internet in order to access
it.
Modem
Process Check #3 - ISP
ISPs are the companies that own these web servers all over the world. By paying them a monthly
fee, they give you a modem and some software. This software will tell your modem how to
connect to their web server.
Since all of these web servers are all connected, and now you are connected to one of them, it
means that you have access to all of the web servers, and all of the web pages stored on them,
all over the world.
That is it! That is the internet and how you can access it.
Phone or cable line connection
Modem
You, at home, on the
internet
Assignment Part 2
 Now add to your poster a representation of you
and your relationship to an ISP.
 Make sure to include:
Modem and a brief definition
ISP and a brief definition
You – or someone at home with a computer
Once again, use the tools in Publisher, not simply
images from the internet to do this.
 Always keep in mind that you will have to explain
all of this to me, the person who knows nothing
about this.
Just when you thought you were done…
Now you should know:
What the internet is
How to get access to it
What you don’t know yet:
How to view web pages
How to find web pages you didn’t know existed.
Looking at web pages
 Now that you are
connected to the internet,
you need another piece
of software that will allow
you to locate and view
these web pages all over
the world.
….drum roll, please….
You need a…
Browser
A Browser…
A what-a-whose-a?
No, A browser! That is that piece of
software (Internet Explorer) that you use
everyday in class to check out all of those
cool websites.
You know how to work it, but you probably
don’t know how it works.
Parts of a browser
 It is first
important to
understand the
parts of a
browser. They
are:
 The Control Bar
 Address box
 The Display window
Actual Browser Window
Browser parts
 The Control bar allows you to do the basic
functions such as go forward and back, print, or
refresh the web pages that you are looking at.
This is the control bar. Take a look at the one you are looking at
right now on your own screen. Hopefully it looks familiar.
More Browser stuff…
 Here is the address bar. Here you type in the Address of
the webpage that you are looking for.
Here is your address bar. It is located at the top of the Browser
window. You have used it many times, I am sure, to go to
www.myspace.com
 The real name for a web address is a URL.
 URL stands for “Uniform” “Resource” “Locator”
 How does my browser know where to go to get the web
page that I am looking for?
My Browser is pretty smart…
 When I type in a URL
(otherwise known as an
address):
 The Browser goes out
onto the internet
 locates the web server
where that address is
stored (even as far away
as India!),
 gathers the information
 and displays that web
page in my Display
Window…
Browser Display Window
 Here is the display window displaying the
Westview Web Page!
Display
window of the
browser
highlighted in
red.
Process Check – A Browser
 A browser is a piece of
software that allows you
to navigate/locate/display
web pages located all
over the world.
 It has three main parts:
 Control Bar – Lets you go
forward and back to different web
pages, refresh them, print them, etc.
 Address Box – Allows you to
type in the URL (address) of the
particular web site. The browser will
then go and locate it on one of those
servers somewhere in the world.
 Display Window – Displays
the web page that you are looking
at.
I like movies…
Here is a small movie that will illustrate
how a browser works

Your Assignment Part 3
Go back to your poster and, yes, once
again, illustrate the following items:
Browser and tell us what one is
URL and tell us what one is
How each part of the browser works so that you
can get to different web sites and look at them.
What if I don’t know the address of a web
site that I am looking for?
 You can use
something called a
Search Engine.
 A car engine?
 No a Search Engine
 What in the world is
that?
A search Engine is….
 A web page like Google, Ask or
Dogpile.
 It searches every web page on
the internet all over the world to
find your search criteria
 Lists all web pages that match
your search criteria
 List those matches in order from
best match to least matching
your criteria.
How do I use one of these…
 No, you don’t put gas in it and turn it
on like a car.
 Yes, you type in “keywords” into the
search box and click “search”.
 These search engines use the
keywords and look for those words in
every web page in the world.
 If a web page contains those words,
then it becomes part of that list of
results that the search engine gives
you.
Process Check – A Search Engine
It is a web page that searches the entire
internet for web sites. You type in
“keywords”, the search engine searches
all web sites for matches to those
keywords and then gives you a list of web
sites that matched.
Your Assignment Part 4
You are almost done!
Go back to your poster and add
illustrations and text that represent:
What a search engine is
How you use a search engine
Use text to help identify the parts and help
explain this information.
Assignment 5 – What this all means
 Lastly, add the final summary, narrative as to how all of this stuff
works together. Start your narrative off with,
 “I am at home with a new computer and I want to get on the
internet. I first need to…”
 Tell us/describe to use the step by step things that someone must
do in order to get connected to the internet.
 Then go on to describe to us how, once connected, what we need to
use to view the internet and how to use it.
 Use all of the terms that were described before as part of this
narrative.
Finishing your poster
 Make it look cool
 Add any additional
images or shapes that
will make it look better
 Get ready to turn it in.
