Skimming
Brief over view of a text
When you’re NOT looking for one specific
answer
When you have to read a lot of materials
in a short amount of time
E.g. What was the neighbor’s advice?
Skimming – How?
Read the first and last sentence of each
paragraph.
Don’t read every word or every
sentence. Let your eyes skim over the
text, taking in key words.
Continue to think about the meaning of
the text.
Scanning
A way of reading to look for specific
information in a text.
For looking up a phone number, for
browsing TV schedules, timetables, lists,
catalogues
or
web
pages
for
information.
E.g. How many sons does the mom
have?
Scanning – How?
Don’t read every word or every
sentence.
Let your eyes move quickly across the
page until you find what you are
looking for.
