Introduction to Web Research
There are a lot of resources on
the Web, but we have to find the
ones we need
Web Directories
General topics to explore
Good for browsing topics
Maintained by people, many times
experts or authorities
Examples
– http://www.yahoo.com, Commercial
• User-submitted sites
– http://infomine.ucr.edu, Academic
• Academically reviewed and approved sites
ASPIRA Pre-Conference Technology Workshop
17
Search Engines
Program finds and indexes sites
Keyword search, more specific
Good when searching for something
specific
Examples
– http://www.google.com/
– http://www.alltheweb.com (meta-search)
– http://www.askjeeves.com (Q&A format)
ASPIRA Pre-Conference Technology Workshop
18
Search Strategy Questions
What do you want to know?
What are the key concepts or topics?
What keywords define those
concepts/topics? (include synonyms)
What is the relationship between the
keywords?
How does the search tool you’re using
require you to specify that relationship?

Building a Web Resource
Using teams, let’s build resource
web pages for your programs
Web Pages using Powerpoint
Create a directory/folder on your floppy disk and
name it “aspira2002_name”
Open Powerpoint and create a presentation for your
program on some topic related to Using the Internet
as a Learning Tool
Include links to relevant web resources
– use “Hyperlink” from the “Insert” menu
When complete, convert PPT to a web page
– use “Save as Web Page” from the “File” menu
Be sure to save in your aspira2002_name
directory/folder
Use “index” as the filename
Note that Powerpoint creates an “index” file and an
“index_files” directory/folder
ASPIRA Pre-Conference Technology Workshop
28
Web Pages using Word
Create a directory/folder on your floppy disk and name it
“aspira2002_name”
Open Word and create one or more documents for your
program on some topic related to Using the Internet as a
Learning Tool
Include links between the document and links to relevant web
resources
– use “Hyperlink” from the “Insert” menu
When complete, convert documents to web pages
– use “Save as Web Page” from the “File” menu
Be sure to save in your aspira2002_name directory/folder
Use “index” as the filename for your first page
Note that in some cases Word creates an “index” file and an
“index_files” directory/folder

Getting Started
A few tips to help you implement
some of these ideas
Getting Started - Plan
Develop a technology integration plan
– Contributes to program objectives
– Promotes active learning for
clients/students
– Get computers into the hands of
clients/students
ASPIRA Pre-Conference Technology Workshop
31
Getting Started - Personnel
Build your knowledge base
– acquire the knowledge yourself or secure a
resource person with the knowledge (could
be a learner)
• “technical” technology skills
• “learning” technology skills
ASPIRA Pre-Conference Technology Workshop
32
Getting Started - Partner
Leverage local resources (find partners)
– Associated school may provide
•
•
•
•
•
•
Space for labs
Fully equipped labs
Internet/e-mail accounts for clients/students
Technical support for equipment
Technology training for staff
Matching funds for any grant money received
ASPIRA Pre-Conference Technology Workshop
33
Getting Started - Hardware
Purchase quality equipment first
– “fast” computers with “fast” access
•
•
•
•
•
256K RAM
CD-RW
80 MB hard drive (the bigger the better)
17” monitor
Dell Computers at http://www.dell.com
– consider portables/handhelds for student loans
ASPIRA Pre-Conference Technology Workshop
34
Getting Started - Programs
Microsoft Office suite standard
–
–
–
–
–
Word for Word Processing
Excel for Spreadsheets
Access for Database
Powerpoint for Presentations
Frontpage for Web Development (or Netscape
Composer)
– Internet Explorer for Web Browser (Netscape
Navigator)
– Outlook for E-mail (or Netscape Messenger)
Free stuff at http://www.cnet.com
ASPIRA Pre-Conference Technology Workshop
35
Getting Started - Access
Dial-up modem access - 28.8 slow; 56K not
too bad but problematic for large graphics,
video or sound files
Cable / DSL / T1 – Fast, but more expensive
than dial-up; becoming common place
Wireless – Growing but not yet universal
LowerMyBills.com
– http://www.lowermybills.com

36
Getting Started - Internet Safety
What/who you allow your students to
access
Who/what you allow to access your
students
