IB Anthropology Internal Assessment (IA)
What is the Anthro IA?
As budding anthropologists, your first task will be to spend one hour observing a
social situation and produce a written report of your observation of no more than 700
words.
The situation may context-based (specific places) or they may be issue based (gender
roles or differences, race, ethnicity, etc). Both must be grounded in concrete settings.
Examples of settings are:
o
Market
o
Shopping Mall
o
Football Game
o
Restaurant
o
Bookstore

“Body Ritual of the Nacirema”
When conducting fieldwork and observations,
you may come across things that seem very
different from what you know as “Culture” or
ritual
Read this example of the Body Rituals of the
Nacirema people silently on your own
Afterwards, we will talk about our reactions to
their cultural rituals.
Think back…
What similarities did you see between the

New Anthro Concept:
ETHNOCENTRISM
judging
another culture solely by the
values and standards of one's own culture.
Ethnocentric
individuals judge other
groups relative to their own ethnic group
or culture, especially with concern for
language, behavior, customs, and religion.
Apply it…
What can this teach us about
viewing other cultures?
What is culture?
What are rituals?
Why did these rituals seem so
foreign at first read?
What changed?
Write
Reread the Nacirema article knowing who it
REALLY is describing and look for the rituals
you recognize as “American”.
WRITE:
Then,
Did
reflect in a paragraph (journal) on:
your perspective of the Nacirema
change?
Why and in what ways?
What did you learn about reading
ethnography and other’s values?
