Sex-linked traits have unique
inheritance patterns
Ch. 10.5
Sex-Linked Genes

Many species have specific sex
chromosome
– Humans have XX = ♀, and XY = ♂

Any gene that is located on sex
chromosome is called SEX-LINKED
GENE

Most sex-linked genes are found on the
X
– X is bigger than Y
What does this mean?

♀ are CARRIERS more often
– 2 X chromosomes

♂ typically HAVE the trait because
nothing is carried on the Y and they only
have ONE X
Sex-linked disorders

In humans, colorblindness and hemophilia
are common sex-linked traits
Concept Check

Describe why one would expect to find more
white-eyed male fruit flies than white-eyed
females in natural populations.
 A man with hemophilia and a homozygous
non-hemophiliac woman have a son. Is it
possible that the son will inherit hemophilia?
Why or why not?
