Genetics continued:
7.1 Sex Linkage
3.4 Genetic traits result in observed inheritance patterns.
3.5 Patterns of inheritance can be explained through Mendel’s
laws of segregation and independent assortment.
3.6 Probabilities for genotype and phenotype combinations in
monohybrid crosses can be modeled using a Punnett Square.

Do Now::
Topic: Genetics
1) List traits that are different
Objectives, language objectives:
from person to person.
(Reminder: Eye color is a trait, and
brown eyes is one version or
expression of that trait)
2) Review – what is the difference
between autosomes and sex
chromosomes?
3) For each trait listed in #1, do
you think that trait is found on
an autosome, or a sex
chromosome?
Relate dominant-recessive
patterns of inheritance in
autosomal chromosomes to
genetic disorders.
Describe patterns of inheritance
in sex-linked traits.
Language Objectives: Use the terms gene,
sex-linked gene, allele, homozygous,
heterozygous , carrier, genotype,
phenotype, dominant, Punnett Square,
monohybrid cross, dihybrid cross,
probability, and recessive orally and in
writing. (all week)
List traits that are
different from person to
person? (Reminder: Eye color is
a trait, and brown eyes is one version
or expression of that trait)
For each of those traits, which are located on autosomes
and which are located on sex chromosomes?
Before we go further…
Review video: Khan Academy “introduction to Mendelian genetics”
Use note taking organizer to review terms from December.
Two copies of each autosomal
gene affect phenotype
Example: Cystic Fibrosis – a disorder caused by recessive
alleles. The disease is lethal, but carriers do not show disease
symptoms – only people who inherit 2 nonworking alleles.
CF example
Carriers are not sick, and may not know they
carry nonworking alleles in their DNA.
Males and females can differ in
sex-linked traits.

See handout for problem, procedure, and questions.
All questions due tomorrow.
7.1 Formative Assessment
Choose and answer 2 questions from numbers 1-5 on
page 191, on left side of notebook.
SUMMARIZE what you learned today in 3-5 sentences
on bottom of right side.
