Transcript French vs. American Views of Autism
Thérèse Wood
”Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism
are both general terms for a group of complex
disorders of brain development. These disorders
are characterized, in varying degrees, by
difficulties in social interaction, verbal and
nonverbal communication and repetitive
behaviors.”
Most obvious signs of ASD are found between the
ages of 2-3
Autistic children can suffer from intellectual
disability, difficulty in motor skills, lack ability to
pay attention, and medical health issues
There is not just one type of Autism
In the last 5 years gene mutations have been linked with
the disorder
Most cases are caused by combination of genes and
environmental factors
Most causes occur before the child is born (parental age at
time of conception, maternal illness while pregnant, and
periods of oxygen deprivation to baby’s brain) THESE
ALONE DO NOT CAUSE THE DISORDER
Role of Immune System is being researched as a potential
cause
Immunizations (MMR vaccine contains thimerosal) No link

“While in most developed countries, children
with Autism go to special schools. In France,
they see a psychiatrist to get talk therapy which
is meant for people with Emotional and
Psychological Problems.”
"The French have a very idiosyncratic view of
autism and, for some reason, they are not
convinced by the evidence.“
Complaints have been filed against France
accusing them of not educating Autistic Children
Made them an excluded group and have made
seldom progress in progress in educating them
Fewer than 20% diagnosed attend school, instead
they are kept home or go to a day hospital for
psychiatric sessions
French
“Experts” insist that psychotherapy is
essential
Use “Packing”- Wrap a nearly naked child in
wet, cold towels in an attempt to reconnect
the child with their bodies
Packing is used as “research”, and some
“experts” say that they see remarkable
results
Others say its barbaric and potentially
dangerous and harmful especially to
vulnerable children
