Finish Pedigree Evidence 2
OBJECTIVE: I will be able to use pedigrees to
investigate inheritance and will be able to understand
how to read a pedigree
•
DO NOW: Turn in Pedigree 1. No HW= Pink Slip!
Look at the family on the handout on your desk and
notice that the grandfather and the grandson don’t
have dimples, but the parents do. “What is your best
explanation for how this happens?”

Let’s use
evidence 2 to
figure out the
rules for how
a trait can
skip a
generation.

•Identify what genes you think are being passed on from one generation to
the next and how many genes are actually being passed on from parents to
children. Is it just one gene from each parent? Two? Three?
•Show how many of each gene is being passed on in the boxes and circles on
the pedigree. You can abbreviate the gene with a letter and indicate how
many of that gene each person has.
•Whatever ideas you come up with should work for all families.

Question 6: Get into groups, with two pairs in each group.
Share your rules with your group and discuss the following
questions.
• Question 7: What kind of evidence would be helpful to decide
which set of rules for the strong gene model is the best one?
• Question 8: Is there any evidence that either contradicts your
rules or is not explained by your rules? If there is any evidence
that is not explained by your rules or contradicts them then you
should discuss changes to the rules so that they can explain
this evidence.
• Question 9: Discuss changes to the rule set that both pairs
agree on.
Evidence 2
Question 10:
• Write down your revised rules for how the strong gene model works.
These rules should describe how genes and traits are inherited in
families. Remember, the rules have to work for all individuals in all
three families!

CLOSURE
• Question 11:
• As a group take a
second look at the
Mother’s Brother.
Based on your group’s
set of rules (from
Question 8) what
genes do you think the
mother’s brother has?
Does he have the
disease? Give reasons
for your answer.
