• HOMEWORK: None
OBJECTIVE: I will be able to use evidence to look at
competing models and choose the best model
DO NOW: What is the difference between
inherited trait and non-genetic (acquired) trait?
Doc # : Genetic vs Acquired:
•
•
Inherited trait: Traits that an organism is
born with determined by their genes
Examples of Inherited traits:
–
–
–
•
•
Acquired trait: Traits that that an organism
is not born with, not determined by genes
Examples of Acquired traits:

Testing Inheritance Models
•
We are going to look at four sample models
from the class on the board
•
Models represent how children inherit their
traits from their parents:
– Write the title of each model on your document

Model 1: Mixed Genes

Model 2: Strong Gene

Model 3: Gender Model

Model 4: Direct Model

Model 4: Direct Model
Testing Inheritance Models
• In pairs, you are going to read Evidence
#1, 2, and 3 to help decide which models
can be ruled out.

Evidence #1
• Look at the six traits. In pairs figure which
version of each trait you have.
• About 70% of people will be able to taste PTC
and 30% won’t. PTC does not occur in nature,
but it is in a family of chemicals that are very
bitter and that are found in some vegetables
like Brussels sprouts.

Evidence #1
• After you look at your traits, read the evidence
about Sara and relate it to the models.
• Note, if any of the traits shown contradict the
model, then the model should be ruled out

Evidence #2
• Relationships between this evidence and
each model are shown below.
• Sara and Teresa have the same exact
traits, but their parents have different
traits.

Evidence #3

Testing Inheritance Models
•
•
It is best to start with evidence one and
systematically check evidence one
against each of the models shown on the
PowerPoint.
If a model cannot account for any piece
of evidence it should be ruled out.

Closure
• Testing Inheritance Models
– Discuss question #3 with your table.
