What is Genetics?
Genetics (a word from Ancient Greek), a discipline of biology, is
the science of genes, heredity, and variation in living organisms.
Genetics deals with the molecular structure and function of genes,
gene behavior in context of a cell or organism (e.g. dominance
and epigenetics), patterns of inheritance from parents to
offsprings, and gene distribution, variation and change in
populations.
Genes are universal to living organisms, genetics can be applied to
the study of all living systems, from viruses and bacteria, through
plants and domestic animals, to humans (as in medical genetics).

Aristotle describes the
animals Alexander has
sent him:
domestication of wild
animals, the start of
livestock husbandry.

Humans first applied genetics to the
domestication of plants and animals between
approximately 10,000 and 12,000 years ago.
This domestication led to the development of
agriculture and fixed human settlements.

Genetics Today
1. –ome and -omics ears: genome and
genomics, transcriptome, proteome and
proteomics,…
2. High throughout: DNA microarray, SNP
chips, transcript chips
3. Genome-wide association study and
Genome-wide selection
4. Epigenetics, epigenome
5. …….

So: the development of Aniaml Genetics
is a process:
• From integral level to cellular level and to molecular level;
• From macroscopic view to microcosmic view;
• From chromosome level to gene level;
• Step-by-step towards the structure and function of
genetic materials.
