In transamination,
• amino acids are degraded in the liver
• an amino group is transferred from an amino acid to an keto acid, usually -ketoglutarate
• a new amino acid and -keto acid are formed
• when alanine combines with -ketoglutarate, pyruvate and
glutamate are produced
