Chemistry
Holt, Rinehart & Winston: 2006
After you get your book, sign
your name on the inside front
cover.
You will be responsible for
returning this same book at the
end of the year.
Page through the book to see
how information is displayed, etc.
iPad Assignment
We will use iPads frequently in Chem 1 for
science article summaries and enrichment
activities.
You will use the same iPad every time and you
will be responsible for that device.
Student Safety Agreement
(SSA)
The SSA must be signed by both the
student and their parent/guardian
before any lab work can be conducted.
I will keep the signed page of the agreement in
a binder and you will keep the rest of the
agreement in your lab folder as a constant
reminder of the safety rules.

Safety Demo
Why is it so important to wear safety glasses
in the lab?
What would happen if a concentrated acid or
base was splashed in your eyes?
Safety Demo
Egg whites and human eyes have a lot of protein.
Proteins are natural polymers formed by linking
hundreds of amino acids together.
When proteins come in contact with strong acids
or bases, they become “denatured” and lose their
structure. (Just like being cooked)
This structure is needed for the proteins to
perform their biological functions.
Denaturing the protein changes its properties
and is irreversible.
Nitric Acid
(HNO3)
Strong, concentrated acid
Always, always, always
wear your safety glasses when in
the laboratory!
Appointment Clocks
Appointment clocks are graphic organizers
that are used to pair students when doing
small group work.
You still get to work with your friends, but you
also get to work with other classmates.
The clocks will be used throughout the year to
pick partners for various activities.
