Laboratory Procedures
Pre-AP Biology
Ms. Haut
Using the Lab Stations
• Lab groups are based on classroom seating
– Students are group by color—look at the color of
your desk number
• When told, group members go straight to their
assigned lab bench and wait for directions
• ALL members must participate equally during
the lab—assign jobs
• Follow directions of the lab activity
Using the Lab Stations
• Clean Up
– Carefully wash all glassware—use soap and scrub
brush and rinse at least 3 times with water
– Put lab kits back the way you found them—replacing
any needed materials
– Raise your hand to have me check your lab station
– I will dismiss you back to your desks
– Make sure stools are returned to under the bench
Lab Safety: Everyone is Responsible!
• "I didn't mean to" and "It wasn't my fault" are two
statements that have no place in the lab. If someone is hurt or
equipment is broken, these statements cannot undo the harm.
• Horse-play will not be tolerated. If it occurs, those involved
will be disqualified from the lab and given a zero for the
assignment.
• Lack of pre-lab preparation is the main threat to safety in our
lab. If you and your group are unprepared, you will be unsure of
yourself, waist time, and have a good chance of making a
mistake that leads to a problem.
• At the beginning of each lab period, you will be given a
chance to ask questions. If you are unsure of some procedure,
now is the time to ask. Always pay close attention to any verbal
instructions given at this time.
Lab Safety: Everyone is Responsible!
• Safety Glasses Must Be Worn in the lab area.
– Other protective clothing, such as gloves and aprons
are at your option, unless otherwise noted.
• Long hair and bulky clothing are dangerous
in the lab.
– Tie back long hair. Leave bulky coats/sweaters at
your desk
– There is a danger of being drawn through chemicals
and/or knocking things over.
– Wear appropriate clothing. –no open-toed or openbacked shoes allowed!
Lab Safety: Everyone is Responsible!
• Accidents can happen
– Remain calm! A minor problem quickly
becomes a major one if you don't.
– Report all accidents immediately, no matter how
small.
• Broken glass
• Spilled chemicals
• Cuts or scrapes
Lab Safety: Everyone is Responsible!
• Lab Safety Equipment
– Eyewash
– Fire extinguisher and fire safety blanket
