The Problem
Heat exchangers are the heart of any cooling system found in industry.
Unfortunately, the efficiency of any exchanger can be compromised when geothermal wells or cooling towers become contaminated by bacteria of many kinds.
Iron, sulfur and other species of bacteria adhere to the walls of the exchanger
and form a gelatinous coating known as bio-film. Bio-film causes a reduction in
heat transfer through;
Occluded space which increases temperature and pressure through decreased
flow within the geothermal or cooling tower side of the heat exchanger.
Thermal insulating matter on the plates impedes heat transfer.
Pitting corrosion on plate surfaces reduces plate heat transfer coefficient.
Additionally, bio-film and planktonic bacteria can move downstream to diffusion
wells where occlusion occurs on screens and in cooling towers where bacterial
contamination occurs.

The Answer
The APF Cleaning Protocol and I2 Air Infused
mixed media.
The APF protocol is used to clean the interior surfaces of the
heat exchanger of existing bio-film.
It is a once a month procedure that requires approx. one hour
per month labor time and no disassembly of the exchanger.
It consists of the following:
First, voiding the exchanger of any standing water within the
exchanger through the introduction of air using the APF
manifold.
Second, introduce the I2 AFI cleaning solution.
Third, provide for continuous 30 min. agitation.
Fourth, liquefy bio-film.
Fifth, purge exchanger of cleaning solutions.
Finally, start of normal water flow.
Note: cleaning solution is retained only in the
exchanger and not allowed into the injection well.
This is an Eco-friendly protocol.
Throughout the month, the
plate walls are continually
bathe in extremely low dose I2
bubbles which keep bio-films
from forming in various ways.
Turbulent bubbles lift and
dislodge bio-film.
Low dose Iodine reduces
microbial content
Bubble flurry prevent planktonic
bacteria from adhering to
plate surface.
Bubbles impart low dose
iodine into water for
downstream disinfection of
cooling tower and diffusion
screens
The patented I2 Air Fluid Infusor Cartridge
produces I2 infused bubbles that
•are dosed for accurate elution. Elutes only grams per month into
water stream. Adjustable based on need and standards.
•are unaffected by water temperature, turbidity, mineral content or
pH.
•converts to Eco-Friendly iodide after contact with bacteria.
•will not effect most materials.
•will have the same effect on microbes as much higher
concentrations.
•are negatively charged.
The I2 infused air molecule
eliminates free floating bacteria
and bacteria resident in existing
biolms.
The bacteria is
destroyed.
Iodine converts to
Eco-friendly iodide
and moves
downstream.
Iodine is drawn into
the cell and key
amino acids in the
respiratory chain are
broken down.
The cell wall is
exposed continually
to new low dose
iodine within the air
bubbles.
The continual profusion of I2
infused bubbles keeps the
plates clean providing optimal
heat transfer. The bubbles
continue on to the diffusion well
screens and cooling towers
where bio-film is eliminated at
those sites.
Does it really work?
300 GPM system, plate heat exchanger/ geothermal well; Inlet pressures
average 13 psi and outlet pressures 4 psi.
Total labor: 75 minutes/month!
What about diffusion screens?
“Hi Mike,
We have been running one 300 GPM supply well. We have
left all 3 diffusion wells open. Each diffusion well has a
capacity of 300 GPM. In order to determine if all 3 diffusion
wells are working properly, we turned two off at a time
so that we tested each diffusion well by itself to ensure
that it was taking 300 GPM.
All 3 took the 300 GPM of water
without increases in incoming or outgoing pressure at the
heat exchanger. I took that to mean that all 3 diffusion
wells are working properly.”
The benefits
The APF Cleaning Protocol and I2 Air Infused
mixed media;
Increases system efficiency.
Effectively removes bio-film and minerals.
Eliminates exchanger breakdown.
Prevents the reformation of bio-films.
Does not use caustic chemicals.
Uses very low dose iodine.
Does not allow exchanger cleaner into groundwater or well
System down time is under 2 hours per month.
Low cost of use.
Does not expose staff and environment to bio-films and
dangerous chemicals.
Environmentally friendly.
