Growth in open access by discipline

Benefits of open access
• Faster progress/better return on investment in research
• Understanding of research outside the research community
(e.g. public, government) is increased
• Increased visibility and readership of articles
• Increased citation impact1
• Authors retain copyright in their work and are free to
redistribute widely
• Facilitates interdisciplinary research and collaboration
• The research literature becomes a resource for research
(text/data mining)
1. For a bibliography of studies on open access and citations, see the SPARC Europe website:
http://sparceurope.org/oaca_table/ 46/60 studies show an increase in citations for open access

Demand for a selective, fully OA journal in HSS
Palgrave Macmillan Researcher Panel Survey (2011):
 82% would publish OA if offered in best/most appropriate
journal1
 68% said their research area would benefit from journals that
publish peer-reviewed OA1
European Commission Study of Open Access Publishing
(2011):
 Two main factors slowing the move to OA were availability of
funding (39%) and [perceived] scarcity of quality OA journals
(30%)2
