OXYCODONE AND HEROIN
ADAM DODSON
WAYNE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE
OPIOIDS
Opioids are substances that act on
the nervous system in a similar way
to opiates such as morphine and
codeine. In a medical context the
term usually indicates medications
that are artificially made rather
than extracted from opium.
Common examples include
oxycodone, hydrocodone and
hydromorphone.
OXYCONTIN
Oxycontin is the brand name and
oxycodone is the generic. Oxycontin
is generally prescribed without
acetominophen while oxycodone is
generally prescribed with. They will
show the same on a drug test. They
last in your system for up to 5 days
after your last dose depending on
your frequency, strength and
personal metabolism
OXYCODONE
Oxycodone has been in clinical use
since 1916, and it is used for
managing moderate to
moderately severe acute or chronic
pain.
OXYCODONE
• Oxycodone is available in a variety of forms
• Immediate-release oxycodone (OxyFast, OxyIR, OxyNorm, Roxicodone)
• Controlled-release oxycodone (OxyContin) – 12-hour duration
• Immediate-release oxycodone with paracetamol (acetaminophen) (Oxycocet, Percocet,
Roxicet, Tylox)
•
•
•
Immediate-release oxycodone with aspirin (Endodan, Oxycodan, Percodan, Roxiprin)
•
Controlled-release oxycodone with naltrexone (Troxyca) – 12-hour duration – pending
regulatory approval
Immediate-release oxycodone with ibuprofen (Combunox)
Controlled-release oxycodone with naloxone (Targin, Targiniq, Targinact) – 12-hour
duration
OXYCODONE
• “Hillbilly Heroin”, “Killers”, “OC”,
and “Oxycotton”.
• Both OxyContin and heroin are
made from opium, which is
obtained from poppy plants. As
a result, they are both considered
opioid narcotics.

HEROIN
Heroin is typically cut with an
additive agent, so the color of the
final product can be anything from
white to brown. Some of the
materials used to cut a heroin batch
include: Caffeine, Flour, Chalk, Talcum
powder, Sucrose, Starch, Meat
tenderizer.
TOLERANCE
A state in which a person no
longer responds to a drug and a
higher dose is required to
achieve the same effect.
WITHDRAWAL
The wide range of symptoms that
occur after stopping or
dramatically reducing opiate
drugs after heavy and prolonged
use. Ex. agitation, anxiety,
sweating, body aches, abdominal
cramps, nausea, and vomiting.
CHASING THE DRAGON
Expression given to the pursuit of
the original or ultimate but
unattainable high, which can
lead to a dangerous spiral of
legal and health consequences.
OVERDOSE
Overdoses can occur with any
quantity of drug. The risk of
overdose is real and can happen
at any point in the cycle of
abuse.
BASELINE
How you normally feel when not using any type of drug.
Graph.
STATISTIC
Approximately 1 in 5 high school
seniors report misusing
prescription drugs at least once
in their lifetime.
Example.
GATEWAY
Drug addictions begin with
marijuana or prescription pills.
Becomes a “life-consuming
routine.”
Katrina: “I couldn’t even function
without 40 pills a day…”
CONSEQUENCES
-habit can cost $800 per week
-put in jail (convicted felon)
-career limitations
-can’t vote
-can’t own a firearm
-social stigma
-become a “loser”
CONNECTIONS BETWEEN OXYCODONE AND HEROIN
-heroin is cheaper than oxycodone
-4 shots of heroin = 1 oxycodone pill
-heroin can be more easily obtained
VICTIMS
Who are victims of oxycodone
and heroin use?
WHAT TO DO
-pills
PLACE IN PILL DRAGON
-needles
PLACE IN A BOTTLE
TRAFFICKING IN A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE
