Spring Workshop Plan
• Duration: Shorten to 3 days; ~~March 23-26
– Overlap with many Spring breaks as possible
• Location: UIC
• Purpose:
– Same goals and target audience as Summer
• invite throughout midwest, light national advert.
– Get some assessment from community colleges
• Invite local CC’s, S. African partners, other observers
– Get Chicago area schools more involved in OSG&TG
• Test the model of shorter regional workshops
– Get the “template” working
– Use the Live Grids as the lab, exclusively
• Create a suitcase gridlab
– Test promotional capabilities and effectiveness
• Collaborators: OSG, TeraGrid, National Center for
Data Mining (Bob Grossman) iCAIR (Joe Mambretti)
Tentative Syllabus
• Day 1
– AM: Grid Intro, UNIX, Networking, Service
oriented science
– PM: Security, Job and resource management
• Day 2
– AM: Data Management, Grid Information Systems
– PM: Workflow
• Day 3
– AM: Grid Data Mining
– PM: Grid Services and WS-RF
Spring Workshop Help Needed
• Lecturers (Condor, Globus)
– Hope to add Data Mining Lecture by Bob Grossman
– Would like to involve leading researchers
• Poster art
• Promotion – help with email and phone calls,
postings, poster mailings
• Student selection
• Lab assistants
• Testing / review of all material
• Linux material (considering “jumpstart day”)
• Student VO Setup (Doug, iGOC)
• Cycle reservations (from OSG sites)
Argentine Workshop
• Target 20-30 PhD students
– Need to learn backgrounds and needs
• Target date range (critical factor): March 8-14.
– 2-3 Day Mentoring (UBuenos Aires):Workflow, Condor, Partnership
– 3 Day Grid Workshop (Santa Fe): lecture + lab (~ 20 hours)
• Would like to use OSG/TG resources
– leave students with permanent certs in OSGEDU VO
– Need to verify networking suitability – perhaps small lab adaptations
• Possible staff: Ben, Mike/Jorge. Volunteer from Condor would be
welcome.
– Support; 1 (ITC), 1 (LSC), 1 (OSG local funds – can share)
– Lab assistants: local students
• Interesting research in LSC that need mentors
– Resource brokering, Applications in astro and bio
• Could benefit from Condor to scrape desktop cycles
• Local cluster / national Grid setup?

• Eastern workshop: Georgetown?
• Central workshop: Nebraska?
• Southwest workshop: Community college
