
Addiction is a term used to describe a
recurring compulsion by an individual to
engage in some specific activity, despite
harmful consequences to the individual's
health, mental state or social life.

Substance abuse is any inappropriate use of a
mind-altering substance.
 If you are underage and drinking, this is
considered substance abuse!
 If you are using medications that are not
prescribed to you, this is substance abuse!

This can be different for everyone.
 Younger people are more likely to develop an
addiction to a substance sooner than an adult
because their bodies are not fully developed yet.

Think of abuse and addiction as points along
a continuum. Different people move at
different rates on this continuum.
