Transcript Independent Variable

Another way to think about
VARIABLES….
Independent variable = the “input”
data…for example, what is the
experimenter putting into the
experiment (CHANGING,
MANIPULATING….)
Dependent variable = dependent on the
other…for example, what relies on the
change (RESULTS)
Identify variables….
You are interested in how stress affects
heart rate in humans.

Identify the independent variable.
 Explain!

Identify the dependent variable.
 Explain!
Answer….
Independent variable would be the stress
Dependent variable would be the heart rate
WHY: You can directly manipulate stress
levels in your human subjects and measure
how those stress levels change heart rate.
Identify variables….
You are a pharmaceutical sells
representative. You are hired to make a
drug that reduces blood pressure.
What would be a good control group?

Identify the independent variable.
 Explain!

Identify the dependent variable.
 Explain!
Answer….
Independent variable would be the drug
Dependent variable would be the
change in blood pressure.
WHY: You can directly manipulate the
drug you prescribe to patients and
measure how those drugs affect blood
pressure.
Control
In this experiment, what would be a
good control group?
Identify the variable…
"There will be a statistically significant difference in
graduation rates of at-risk high-school seniors who
participate in an intensive study program as
opposed to at-risk high-school seniors who do not
participate in the intensive study program."
(LaFountain & Bartos, 2002, p. 57)
What would be a good control group?
Identify the independent variable

Explain!
Identify the dependent variable

Explain!
Answers…
Independent Variable: Participation
in intensive study program
Dependent Variable: Graduation rates
WHY: You can directly manipulate those
seniors that participate in the study
program and measure how their
participation affects graduation.
Control
In this experiment, what would be a
good control group?
Graphing CFA
Take out a sheet of paper and put your
name on it.
Title it “Graphing CFA”
Follow the directions on the powerpoint
and write only your answers on your
paper
Inquiry Lab
Ensure that you have three variables in your
experiment: control, dependent and
independent
Make sure your hypothesis is TESTABLE!
Finalize your introduction….make sure you
answer the questions provided in your
instructions.



Intro should be 4 – 5 complete sentences.
Relate research to the variable you are testing.
Incorporate your hypothesis.
