‘Voices’ of Dependent Drug Users
experiences and perceptions of people trying to reduce or
quit their drug, alcohol or tobacco consumption
EMCDDA, Scientific Committee Meeting, November 2010,
Deborah Olszewski and Cross-Unit project Treatment
'Voices' publication for 2011: based on
quotations taken from interviews
Target group - samples of people with substance use problems in treatment or
outside of treatment services
Quotations – can be found in published or grey literature, reports from treatment
services and reports from outreach services and non-government organisations
Objective is to:
•
provide very personal accounts of a problem from the perspective of the
individuals involved
•
provide deeper understanding of salient and diverse issues for people who are
trying to reduce or quit their substance use
•
highlight some key similarities and differences among such people
•
inform the creation of more innovative, holistic and effective responses
Bottom line - qualitative work is required to
inform and strengthen the European statistics
Previous ‘Voices’ publications were well received, numerous copies
were downloaded and some countries have already translated
them for wider national dissemination

Quotation
“With a methadone script I’ll not be
going near people that are doing a
lot of stuff. I make a point of staying
well clear of them ‘cos that’s not the
life that I want”
