Background ERANID project
= European Area Network on Illicit Drugs
• FP7 project (01/01/2013 – 31/12/2016)
• Aim: Improve cooperation in drug research in order to allow
well-founded policy decisions, by:
– Developing shared priorities for research
– Launching joint research calls
• Involvement of BE:
– BELSPO:
 Member of the ERANID project
 Member of the Joint Call Secretariat
 Funding partner: maximum 500.000 euro
– FWO:
 Funding partner: maximum of 200.000 euro

Call topic
• Objective: to support transnational research in
Understanding drug use pathways.
• Possible areas of focus:
– The impact of the digital world;
– The impact of subjective experiences;
– The impact of socioeconomic and physiological factors on drug use
pathways.
• Conditions:
– Open to all stages of drug use pathways, to all age groups and to all
substances (including legal substances and NPS when relevant to illicit
drug use pathway);
– The use of multidisciplinary approaches involving SSH,
notwithstanding the input from other disciplines;
– Preference for innovative interdisciplinary research proposals;
– Consider the principles of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI).

Eligibility
• ERANID eligibility criteria
– A minimum of two eligible applicants, although preference will
be given to three or more;
– Participants not eligible can participate if they are able to
secure their own funding;
– The majority of participants in a consortium and the Principle
Investigator (PI) should be eligible to be funded;
– Each consortium must nominate a PI;
– Each applicant can submit up to two research proposals as coPI or only one as PI;
– Individual research groups will be funded by their national
funding organisation(s);
– The duration of the projects can be up to three years.

• BE eligibility criteria
– Eligible institutions: non profit institutions with the pursuit of
scientific research stated in the official statutes of the
organisations;
– An eligible Belgian promoter: a physical person or the
appointed leader of a group of researchers from the same
organisation;
– Belgian promoters from different Belgian eligible research
institutions can enter a given transnational network of
applicants;
– Requested budget per Belgian participation in a proposal (as a
Belgian promoter or as a Belgian Network) shall not exceed
250.000€;
– Rules concerning eligible costs are respected;

• Personnel costs (preferably around 60% of total requested budget)
• Operation costs (lump sum of 10% of personnel costs).
