What is the FDA?
In the early 1900’s the US government began to pass
laws that set safety standards for foods and medicines.
One law was the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.
It made it illegal for companies to sell impure food and unsafe
medicines and cosmetics
The Food and Drug Administration enforces this law
More about the FDA
Another responsibility of the FDA is to approve new
medicines
Before the medicine can be sold the manufacturer must give test
results to the FDA.
These tests must prove that the medicine is safe and that it works.
If the medicines meets all of the FDA standards the FDA gives
the manufacturer the approval to make the medicine.
The FDA continues to monitor the safety and effectiveness of the
medicine and if at any time the manufacturer fails to meet the
FDA standards the FDA will take the manufacturer to federal
court.

Section 2
What are the Effects of Drug Abuse?
What is Drug Abuse?
The repeated use of any
drug for the wrong
reasons
What is Drug Dependence?
The physical or
emotional need to take
one or more drugs
What is Physical Dependence?
Physical dependence is
when the body needs the
drug
Each time the effects of the
drug where off the person
feels pain or becomes ill.
These symptoms are caused
by withdrawal of the drug.
To avoid the pain of
withdrawal, the person keeps
using the drug.
What is Emotional Dependence?
Emotional dependence is
when a person thinks he or
she needs the drug.
Gives the person a false
sense of well-being.
Cannot stop thinking about
the drug
Each time the drug wears off
the person wants to feel it’s
effects again.
What is tolerance?
The body’s ability to get used to amounts of
certain drugs is tolerance.
When a person develops tolerance for a drug,
larger and larger amounts of the drug are
needed for the person to feel the original effects.
When a person continues to increase the
dosage of a drug they could take an overdose.
An overdose is a drug dose large enough to
cause serious harm to the body.
What are the effects of an overdose?
An overdose can cause
Pain
Loss of coordination
Death
The effects of the overdose
depend on the drug and the
person’s tolerance to the
drug.
The same drug can have
mild effects at one time and
cause death at another.
Why to Some People Abuse Drugs?
People abuse drugs for 4 different reasons
Some use a medicine for the wrong reasons
They take medicines without following directions
They take too much of the medicine or take it too often.
They may use the medicine checking with a physician.
Drug Abuse
When a person uses a drug and
knows they are harming themselves,
but continues to take the drug they
are known as DRUG ABUSERS.
Many people who abuse drugs
believe that they will only do so for a
short while.
These people take the drug every
day and think they can stop
whenever they wish.
When they finally try to stop they
cannot.
How does Drug Abuse Affect People
Other than the Drug Abuser?
Drug abuse worsens
relationships with family
and friends.
People who abuse drugs
have an effect on their
community as well.
The drug abuser
“borrows” or steals from
family and friends in
order to get money for
drugs
Communities spend
millions of dollars each
year to arrest drug
abusers.
