The Administration of Conscious (Moderate) Sedation”
by
Arturo J. Sobarzo, M.D.
Department of Anesthesia Chairman
It is the goal of Southwest General Hospital to provide our patients with the highest quality of
care. Conscious Sedation allows us to manage certain patient situations in a more humane
and care-giving manner. A drug induced depression of a patient’s level of consciousness to a
“moderate” level of sedation is intended to facilitate the successful performance of the
diagnostic or therapeutic procedure while providing patient comfort and cooperation.
Physicians providing conscious sedation must be qualified to recognize “deep” sedation,
manage its consequences, and adjust the level of sedation to a “moderate” or lesser level. It
is required that physicians administering conscious sedation be credentialed to do so. This
enduring material was developed to assist the Southwest General Hospital medical staff in
meeting this requirement.
Upon completion of the activity, participants should be able to :
Differentiate conscious sedation from light sedation, deep sedation and general anesthesia.
Describe the desired outcomes of conscious sedation.
Record the normal dosage, rate of administration, onset and duration of action, and adverse effects
of specific pharmacologic agents used in conscious sedation.
Describe the correct technique for administering reversal agents.
Identify potential complications related to conscious sedation.
Examine age specific differences in managing the care of patients receiving conscious sedation.
Target Audience: Attending staff who wish to be credited in moderate (conscious) sedation. Although anyone may
take the course and receive CME credit, moderate sedation credentialing also requires current ACLS certification and
previous clinical training and experience in administering conscious sedation. No one could be expected to be
considered competent on the basis of taking a written course.
Southwest General Hospital is accredited by the Texas Medical Association to provide continuing Medical Education for
physicians. Southwest General Hospital designates this educational activity for a maximum of 2.0 AMA PRA Category
1 credits™. Participants should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Location: http://www.swgeneralhospital.com/for_physicians/cme. After reviewing the
presentation, the participant is to complete an Evaluation and Post-Test. Both documents are
to be submitted to the CME Office via email to [email protected] or fax #(210) 9213359. Participants must receive a passing score of 80% on the post-test to qualify for
continuing medical education credit. For more information, you may contact the CME
Coordinator at (210) 332-1374. Available August 2012 through August 2014.
