SAMHSA Definition
“Co-occurring disorders may include any
combination of two or more substance
abuse disorders and mental disorders
identified in the Diagnostic and Statistical
Manual of Mental Disorders-IV (DSM-IV).
There are no specific combinations
of….disorders that are defined uniquely as
co-occurring disorders.”

• EB Process is a way of doing practice
which involves an individualizing process
whereby evidence is used to make
collaborative decisions with clients and
caregivers. (Mullen, 2004)
• EB Process is the integration of best
research evidence with clinical expertise
and patient values (Sackett et al., 2000).
