ABSTRACT
Study of Antibiotic Usage on Gastroenteritis Patient at Departemen of
Tropical Infectious Disease of Teaching Hospital Dr. Soetomo Surabaya.
This study was aimed to analyze Drug Utilization Study (DUS) about the
usage of antibiotic on gastroenteritis patient at Departemen of Tropical Infectious
Disease RSU Dr. Soetomo Surabaya from period 1st of January to 30th of June
2005. DUS was covered relationship between laboratory and clinical data with the
therapy that was given; the profile of antibiotic usage that include: drug name, route,
dose, and the modus duration of antibiotic usage during in hospital; and possibility of
Drug Related Problems (DRPs). This study was using retrospective data from Patient
Medication Record and analyzed descriptively which its result was compared with
textbook and guidelines. The results showed that antibiotic usage on gastroenteritis
patient was routine empirical use, just 6,8% from total sample that have fecal
microscopic examination. Antibiotic that commonly used was cotrimoxazole 960 mg
PO bid for 2-3 days. It was the drug of choice for E.coli infection that was the
prominent pathogen in infectious intraabdominal. The other antibiotic that used on
gastroenteritis patient were ciprofloxacin, ceftrixone, ceftazidime, cefotaxime,
tetracycline, metronidazole, amoxycillin, ampicillin. There were combination of
antibiotic that used on gastroenteritis patient: cotrimoxazole, cotrimoxazole +
metronidazole, cotrimoxazole + ceftazidime, ciprofloxacin + ceftazidime, and
metronidazole + ceftriaxone. The dose was generally appropriate for each patient.
The possibility DRPs were unnecessary drug therapy, wrong drug, dosage too
low/high, inappropriate compliance.
Beside bacteri, infectious agents that usually cause gastroenteritis are virus
and parasite. It is necessary to make the other research to analyze DUS in this cases.
