Definition
• A bitter, yellowish-brown, strongly
addictive narcotic drug prepared from the
dried juice of unripe pods of the opium
poppy and containing alkaloids such as
morphine, codeine, and papaverine.
Names
• Papaver Somniferum plant
• Chemical: None – all forms come from the
natural resin of plant
• Opioid category
• Street: “Big O, black stuff, hop”
Use/Effects
• Smoked or swallowed (injected when
refined to heroin, morphine)
• Relief/euphoria of anxiety and pain;
lethargy, apathy, drowsiness, confusion,
inability to concentrate, nausea,
constipation and respiratory depression
• Can lead to physical dependence
