Location: Jordan is located in the heart of the Middle East, Northwest of Saudi
Arabia, south of Syria, Southwest of Iraq, and east of the Occupied West Bank.
Jordan has access to the Red Sea via the port city of Aqaba, located at the
northern end of the Gulf of Aqaba.
Population: 5,723,000 (2007)

Jordan food & drug administration
With the events that food control in Jordan were found since
the establishment of the Ministry of Health, the Directorate of
food control in its current form is the product of the process of
development began to establish within the Food Division of the
Directorate of Primary Health Care.
In 1993:
established the Directorate of Food Hygiene within the
Directorate General of Primary Health Care in the Ministry of
Health. And with the emergence of the trend towards giving
more attention to food safety law was passed control of food
No. 79 for the year 2001 and beyond the law of the General
Organization for Food and Drug Administration No. 31 of 2003
and by virtue of which became the Directorate of control over
the food, one of the directorates of the General Organization for
Food and Drug Administration.
The mission of the Directorate of Food Control in improving the
control of food to the highest level possible within the resources
available through good planning for health control programs on food
and effective supervision of these programs and management of
capabilities available efficiently and effectively.
That modern concepts that have entered the field of food control and
accumulated experience in this subject makes development is
indispensable, and in this sense the Directorate of food control
developed a new vision for the structure and administrative
functions, and has approved the new structure by the Board of
Directors General of Food and Drug Administration on 23/2/2006 and
is activating the new structure as of June 2006.
The reorganization process divide the activities of the
Directorate of food control to the following key sectors:
• the preparation of legislation and standards for food
• the application of this legislation in the field and take action
• Planning and coordination and follow-up and quality control
• Research and development

This department is intended to ensure control on imported
food and be efficient, effective and based on uniform
standards at all customs centers.
This section consists of two divisions:
1. Division of imported food
2. Division of exported food
The main duties of this section:
• supervision of the imported food control at the customs
• Develop procedures and control mechanisms for food
importer
and exporter
• discuss the food control standards with trading partners
of the Kingdom, whether for the purposes of import or export
• Develop standards and foundations of health certificates
for food
• managing the food safety of food imported or exported
Control on imported food
The food inspectors of the Jordan Food and Drug Administration inspect
consignments of food imported into the customs offices directly.
1. Customs Centre Aqaba, where it is through this center clearance of
approximately seven thousand consignment of imported food annually.
2. Amman Customs Center, where it is through this center clearance
of approximately 14000 consignment of imported food annually.
3. Centre for Customs Queen Alia International Airport, where
it is through this center clearance of nearly six thousand consignment of
imported food annually.

The control of imported food in that customs by:
• check the documents and health certificates
accompanying consignments
Check the card statement in Arabic
• read the temperature of consignment during
the journey if refrigerated or frozen
• physical examination of food to ensure quality
and safety.
• Send samples of the Food to laboratory to
ensure compliance to the health and relevant
