Affluence: Rich vs Poor States
• Why are some countries rich while others are
poor? That is certainly an interesting question.
• If we want to be able to answer it, we first
need to know the criteria that would allow us
to objectively assess the affluence of a country
• Gross Domestic Product = GDP
• Gross domestic product = the market value of
all final goods and services produced in a
country in a given period.
Affluence: Rich vs Poor States
• GDP per capita = most widely used measure, it
allows us to compare small and big countries
• (Singapore may have smaller total GDP than
China, but people living in Singapore are much
richer than people living in China = Singapore’s
GDP per capita is higher than China’s
