CASE STUDIES
A local water/sewerage utility
had a communications
problem. Their antiquated two-way radio system had neither the capacity
nor the range to cover their expanding service area. Building a new system
was too expensive and commercial services didn't cover the remote sectors
of their service area well.
An WNC LCN consultant helped the utility evaluate their needs and
explore options to find a solution. The consultant prepared a request for
proposals that was used to solicit bids from two equipment suppliers and
three radio service providers.
Through extensive negotiations a workable solution was achieved in
contract with one of the radio service providers. Where coverage was poor,
the utility agreed to allow gap filler antennas on top of their water towers.
A true win-win solution.
An WNC LCN Consultant is the architect for SAMCat,
(Secure Active Metadata Catalog), a distributed messaging system based on
XML used by Boeing Corporation and NCSA (National Center for
Supercomputing Applications) to prototype a specialized database application
that tracks manufacturing line inspections and parcels out new tasks to
inspectors automatically. When fully implemented, inspectors will be able to
move about with a hand-held computer or (PDA) personal digital assistant
connected to a central database via a wireless network. The PDA will constantly
receive updates on what inspection tasks can be performed.
The inspectors, meanwhile, will constantly update their progress on the PDA.
The system will then determine which tasks can be performed as a result of that
progress. New tasks can be delivered to inspectors in real-time according to
their skills, certifications, or roles in the assembly plant. Problems, instead of
being trapped in an inspector's notebook until the next time he makes a report,
become common knowledge and can be addressed that much faster
