World Closer to Food Price Shock
目录
词汇
The world has moved a step closer to a food price shock after 1 the US government surprised traders by
cutting stock forecasts for key crops, sending corn and soybean prices to their highest level in 30
months.
The price jump comes after the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization warned last week that the
world could see repetition of the 2008 2 food crisis if prices rose further. The trend is becoming a major
concern in developing countries.
While officials are drawing comfort from stable rice prices, key for feeding 3 Asia they warn that a
sustained period of high prices, especially in grains such as wheat, would 4 hit poorer countries.
“Stocks of corn and soybeans are at 5 incredibly tight levels ... and the markets are surging to
incredibly strong prices,” Chad Hart, agricultural economist at Iowa State University, said.
Agricultural traders and analysts warn that the latest revision to 6 US and global stock
meant there was
脆弱的
no further room for weather problems. The crops in Argentina and Brazil look fragile due to dryness.
Traders are particularly 7 concerned about the cost of vegetable oil, key for 8 developing countries such
as China where an emerging middle class is buying more frying oil. The US Department of Agriculture
said the 9 ratio of global stocks-to-demand would fall later this year to “levels unseen since the mid1970s, reflecting an accelerated pace of vegetable oil” consumption for food and
fuel.
蒲式耳(谷物计量单位)
In Chicago, the price of soybeans rose as much as 5.2 per cent to $14.20 a bushel, the highest since late
2008. The USDA said that domestic stocks-to-demand would drop to the 10 lowest point in nearly half a
century.

UK Trade Deficit Worsens
3.1 Text A
目录
词汇
Britain’s trade deficit with other countries unexpectedly worsened in October, raising questions about
the capacity of exports to lead the country’s economic recovery.
Although exports rose 4.1% to £23.1bn, the highest since May 2006, they were outstripped by the
growth of imports, which were driven higher by the demand for chemicals from Europe, the Office for
National Statistics said.
The deficit on goods with the rest of the world rose to £8.5bn, up from £8.4bn, while the surplus on
trade in services remained unchanged at £4.6bn. Britain tends to import goods such as machinery or
clothes, while it exports services such law and finance, where professionals are often hired to manage
deals abroad.
Howard Archer, chief UK and European economist at IHS Global Insight, said: “The widening of the
trade deficit in October is an early blow to hopes that net trade can make another healthy positive
contribution to GDP growth.”
The disappointing figures will bolster the majority view on the Bank of England’s monetary policy
committee (MPC), which voted today to keep interest rates on hold at 0.5% for the 21st month
running and also maintain its quantitative easing program at £200bn.
Unexpectedly strong growth and an improving picture from the manufacturing sector had encouraged
some experts to call on the MPC raise rates to head off the threat of inflation. But the trade figures
underline the difficulties on the road to recovery over the next year.

In its latest forecast, the Office for Budget Responsibility projected 6.9% growth in exports in 2011
and 7.1% in 2012. However, Charles Davis, managing economist at the Centre for Economics and
Business Research, said: “Our view is that the instability in the Eurozone means that export growth
will be weaker than this.”
词汇
With high-deficit European countries such as Spain, Italy and Portugal at the centre of a financial
storm, economists are urging British companies to export more to emerging markets such as China,
Brazil and Russia. In 2009, Britain exported more to Ireland, which has 4.5 million people, than to
China, Brazil, India and Russia (the so-called Bric countries) put together. The Eurozone is Britain’s
biggest trading partner, followed by the US.
Davis said: “Domestic demand here will be under constraints because of the fiscal tightening – we
have to look at foreign demand. The UK needs to tap into these emerging markets.”
Germany, where the economy is booming, has significantly increased trade with China, which is set to
become a bigger trading partner than France by next year, according to Goldman Sachs. China is only
Britain’s ninth-largest export market, with £644m worth of sales in October. On the other hand,
Britons bought £2.6bn worth of Chinese goods in October, making it the second biggest source of
imports.
Countries are rushing to sign trade deals with Beijing to secure multimillion-pound sales to China’s
increasingly affluent population. The country has already become Brazil’s main trading partner.
Forecasts of double-digit growth is expected to make the Bric countries take over the US as the
world’s No. 1 economic power by the end of the decade.

Indian Food Prices Spark Wider Fears
Indian food prices have hit 1 their highest level in more than a year, rising at an annual 2 rate of 18 per
cent in what economists have taken as a worrying sign that the impact of surging commodity prices is
hitting the broader economy.
Food inflation in India is being driven by many of the same factors that have pushed the price of global
commodities such as 3 wheat and barley to record highs. It also highlights rising fears of a broader crisis
in the developing world, with the UN’s Food and Agricultural Organization warning this week that global
prices had surpassed 4 levels seen during the 2007-08 crisis.
India’s commerce and industry ministry said on Thursday that food prices rose at an annual rate of 18.32
per cent in the week to December 25. The move capped more than a year of double-digit food price

For Chhaya Singh, a 17-year-old student shopping for daily staples in Mumbai’s Colaba market, that has

“We have to find alternative 7 vegetables,” he said.

Nahi Chaudhary, a 38-year-old Mumbai housewife, the higher prices have meant buying 8 fewer
aubergines, okra and other now-expensive vegetables. “The increase in price is terrible,” she said. “In fact
we don’t eat out at all any more 9 as restaurants have even increased their charges.”
Although still below the more than 20 per cent inflation levels seen in 2009, economists fear that a longterm structural shift in food consumption means that prices are likely to 10 be an ongoing concern for
politicians and the Reserve Bank of India, the central bank.

On China’s Economic Development
With its opening and reform for more than three decades, China enjoys its
economic boom today. Great changes have taken place, with people’s living standard
having been improved a lot. We can find almost every household has computer, TV
and mobile, which were unimaginable three decades ago. Today, even primary school
students have cell phones as their daily necessity.
However, behind this economic prosperity, we should still see there is an
increasingly large gap between the rich and the poor, with witnessing the average
housing price in many provincial cities hitting more than ten thousand yuan per
square meter while many fresh graduate earning less than two thousand yuan a month.
This is truly a problem. And the government is working on it.
So we hope, with its fast economic development, China can truly become a
harmonious country. And we believe, better China, better life.

Global Economy Affected by Egyptian Unrest

词汇
The violent clashes and looting in Egypt spawned by the standoff between protesters and President Hosni
Mubarak are threatening the economy across the region and around the world.
Egypt’s economy is relatively small -- the fourth-largest in the Mideast, with a gross domestic product
last year of just under $217 billion, according to International Monetary Fund estimates. But the country

thoroughfares, the Suez Canal.
Egypt is also the world’s largest buyer of wheat and a significant cotton exporter. And it hosts one of the
region’s most globalized financial markets, making the country’s equities a popular play among
emerging-market investors.
In the short term, the biggest global economic worry remains oil prices. Egypt itself isn’t a big energy
producer. But significant shipments of oil and petroleum products pass through Egypt each day on their
way from the Mideast to European and U.S. markets.
About a million barrels a day of crude and refined products are shipped northward on the Suez Canal,
according to estimates from the U.S. Department of Energy. A separate pipeline linking the Red Sea and
the Mediterranean carries an additional 1.1 million barrels a day. Together, that is roughly 2% of global
oil production.
If oil shipments through Egypt were disrupted, European supply -- and global prices -- would be
‘affected tremendously,’ said Dalton Garis, an associate professor in petroleum-market behavior at the
Petroleum Institute, an energy-research center in Abu Dhabi.
宵禁令
So far, oil flowing through both conduits appears unhindered. But a dusk-to-dawn curfew across the
country had shippers operating in the canal warning customers over the weekend of potential delays and

On Friday, U.S. benchmark crude futures leapt more than 4% after tens of thousands of protesters
confronted security forces across Egypt. By contrast, oil markets barely budged through the
summer of 2009 on the back of large antigovernment protests across Iran, one of the world’s
largest oil producers. The different market reactions underscore a very different global supply and
demand picture in just the past 18 months. After a sharp drop in the wake of the financial and
economic downturn, crude demand has picked up recently. That has made markets much more
sensitive to the threat of supply disruptions.

unrest began in Tunisia, culminating in the ouster of that country’s longtime autocratic leader this
month, and has also rocked Yemen. Saudi Arabia and the rest of the energy-rich Persian Gulf have
been spared demonstrations so far,蔓延
but Arab leaders appeared over the weekend to be increasingly
concerned about spillover.
The country is also the world’s biggest wheat purchaser and a top cotton exporter. On Friday in
Chicago, wheat futures fell more than 2%, in part on worries that regime change in Cairo could
hurt Egypt’s ability to pay for wheat. The government’s official wheat buyer said Sunday it had no
plans to change orders. ‘We will purchase the usual quantities,’ said Nomani Nasr Nomani, vice
chairman for the General Authority for Supply and Commodities.

6. Problem-Solving Skills 2
Appreciative inquiry
Start Here
目录
词汇
Imagine that your organization’s order book is full, and you’re desperate to expand your business – but
you just can’t find the staff you need. What’s worse, cash is tight, your recruitment budget is stretched to
breaking point, and you strongly suspect that some of the approaches you’re using just aren’t working.
One approach here is to focus on the things that aren’t working, and think about how you can fix them.
This is the conventional approach to problem-solving. In many cases it’s the right one to use. However
in others, all it does is bring you up to the same bland level as everyone else.
Another approach is to shift to a positive perspective, look at the things that are working, and build on
them. In some situations this can be very powerful because, by focusing on positives, you can build the
unique strengths which bring real success.
This is the premise behind “Appreciative Inquiry”, a method of problem solving that was pioneered by
David Cooperrider of Case Western Reserve University in the mid 1980s.
To understand the basis of Appreciative Inquiry it is useful to look at the meaning of the two words in
context.
Appreciation means to recognize and value the contributions or attributes of things and people around
us.
Inquiry means to explore and discover, in the spirit of seeking to better understand, and being open to
new possibilities.
When combined, this means that by appreciating what is good and valuable in the present situation, we
can discover and learn about ways to effect positive change for the future.
To apply Appreciative Inquiry to a problem solving situation, it’s important to focus on positives. A
positive energy approach helps you build on your strengths, just as conventional problem-solving can
help you manage or eliminate your weaknesses.
The first step of the process is to identify and describe the problem you’re trying to solve. From there
you go on to look at the issue in four phases: Discovery, Dream, Design and Deliver.

The New Rich

idea of this article with the help of dictionaries afterwards.
词汇
What does it take to be considered rich in 2010? The old million-dollar standard seems defunct now that
this amount is often touted as a minimum that should be saved for a comfortable retirement. Let’s look at
some recent attempts to pinpoint the new standard of wealth.
Movies
In the movie Austin Powers, Dr. Evil, the villain frozen in the 60s and thawed in modern times, tries to
extort the world’s leaders. He demands $1 million, and they all laugh at him. Dr. Evil later figures out
that he needs to ask for much more money -- $1 million just isn’t a significant sum. The bad doctor later
ups his demand to a suitably sinister $100 billion.
Another popular reference to our changing standards of wealth occurs in The Social Network, a 2010
movie about the founding of Facebook. A conversation between Justin Timberlake’s Sean Parker
character and Andrew Garfield’s Eduardo Saverin character goes like this:
Sean Parker: You know what’s cooler than a million dollars?
Eduardo Saverin: You?
Sean Parker: A billion dollars.
The exchange occurs at a pivotal point in the movie when Facebook has proven successful but has not
yet hit it big and the protagonists are considering the website’s future. Parker’s remarks seem to reflect
the changing standard of wealth -- no longer is it enough to become a millionaire. Now it takes a billion
dollars to truly impress the masses.
A billion dollars has also become the standard of great success at the box office. The highest-grossing
movies of all time, Avatar and Titanic each made significantly more than $1 billion in worldwide box
office receipts. So did Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s
Chest, Toy Story 3, Alice in Wonderland and The Dark Knight.

Forbes’ List
When Forbes first began compiling its lists of the 400 richest Americans back in 1982, just 13 of those
people were billionaires. In 2010, every person on the list was worth at least a billion dollars, and the
highest-ranked person, Bill Gates, was worth $54 billion.
Forbes’ 2010 list of the world’s billionaires includes a whopping 1,011 entries. Of those, 75 people are
tied for last place with a net worth of $1 billion. These people come not just from the United States, but
also from India, Turkey, China, Romania, Italy, Poland, Malaysia, Pakistan and other countries. And
while a few familiar names grace the bottom of the list, like J. K. Rowling and James Dyson, many of
these mere billionaires -- and even some of the richest people on the list -- are relatively obscure. You
don’t have to be a Warren Buffett or a Sergey Brin to find yourself at the top.
Books
A 2008 book titled The Middle Class Millionaire states that 8.4 million Americans have a net worth
between $1 million and $10 million, including home equity. We can assume that many people have fallen
out of this category with the decline in home values since the time the book was written, but the idea that
you can be a millionaire, or even a multimillionaire, and still be middle class shows how times have
changed.
There are numerous books for sale with “billionaire” in the title. Claiming to teach ordinary readers how
to achieve ultra riches are these popular titles (to name a few) in the business and investing category:
Trump Strategies for Real Estate: Billionaire Lessons for the Small Investor, Think Like a Billionaire,
Become a Billionaire and Blueprint to a Billion: 7 Essentials to Achieve Exponential Growth. Even topselling children’s books like The Billionaire’s Curse, Mr. Gum and the Biscuit Billionaire and Billionaire
Boy make a billion dollars the new standard to aspire to.
Music
Travie McCoy’s hit song, Billionaire, describes what the singer would do if he had a billion dollars -adopt lots of children, give away several Mercedes, revitalize New Orleans, and fix the recession, among
other feats. The song spent 20 weeks on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, peaking at No. 4. Setting aside the
fact that a billion dollars wouldn’t come close to cleaning up after a natural disaster or ending a recession,
the song sends the message that it takes a billion dollars if you really want to make a big difference.

Housing
A million dollars might not even buy you a house in one of America’s top 10 most expensive cities for
real estate, according to a September 22, 2010, MarketWatch article. The most expensive city on the
list, Newport Beach, Calif., had an average list price of $1.83 million, while the least expensive on the
list, Santa Barbara, Calif., had an average list price of $1.02 million for the period February to August
2010. And some surveys of wealth don’t even include home equity in assessing people’s net worth. The
annual World Wealth Report defines high net worth individuals as “those having investable assets of
U.S. $1 million or more, excluding primary residence, collectibles, consumables and consumer
durables.”
Professional Sports
A 2009 Forbes article, “The Most Valuable Teams in Sports,” reported that as recently as 2003, not a
single professional sports team was valued at $1 billion. But 2008 saw 24 teams worth $1 billion or
more. Soccer’s Manchester United topped the list at $1.8 billion. Despite the recession, Forbes’ most
recent list has 25 entries: joining Man-U are 19 NFL teams, MLB’s New York Yankees, and four other
soccer teams.
The Bottom Line
For many people, having a net worth of $1 million or even $100,000 still seems unattainable, yet these
days neither of these figures is likely to impress anyone unless you attain them at a young age. Of
course, even then, you’ll be competing with the legacies of Bill Gates, Michael Dell and Mark
Zuckerberg, all of whom were multimillionaires or billionaires before they turned 30.

(Dalton Garis)
