Lessons from the MDGs (positive)
+ Focused attention on a few goals
+ Presented concrete goals to galvanize
support
+ Bridged the gap between economy,
society and environment
+ Shifted policy attention beyond mere
economic growth
+ Clear targets allowed monitoring
Lessons from MDGs (negative)
− Reduced importance of many other
internationally agreed goals
− Left out many important issues: human
rights, inequality, unemployment, peace
and security…
− Global targets reduced flexibility at
national level
− Targets were not always well defined or
indicators well selected
Post-2015 Development Agenda
• Building on the MDGs
– Those goals not yet achieved will need to stay in the
list for additional efforts
• Improving the content of existing MDGs
– Some, such as MDG7, could use a review to make
their targets and indicators more suitable
• Identifying new goals
– Emerging challenges, such as growing inequality,
need global goals and targets
