A Region in Change
Strukturwandel im Ruhrgebiet
–
After London and Paris, the Ruhr Area is Europe‘s third largest
metropolitan area
–
The region is characterised by structural change - from the former coal
and steel district (“Revier“) to an important location for service
enterprises
–
The Ruhr Area has about 5,4 million inhabitants
–
The region‘s economy is still growing at below average rates compared
to NRW. Meanwhile, with 116 milliard Euro, the Ruhr Area generates only
one fourth of NRW‘s GDP.
–
Structural change is in full swing: more and more persons work in the
services sector, less and less in the industrial sector.
–
With 12 percent (2002), the unemployment rate lies above the national
average.

Scientific Potential
–
With six universities and nine colleges of higher education, as well as
numerous technology centres and research institutes, the Ruhr Area has the
highest density of universities in Europe.
–
In the winter semester 2001/2002, 165.802 students were enrolled in the
region‘s universities.
–
To use this potential for the promotion of the regional economy is one of
the goals of the „Wachstums- und Beschäftigungspakt Ruhr“ (Growth and
Employment Pact Ruhr).

• Market success
The supported cooperation must result
in marketable and market-ready
products, processes or services.
Jobs
