How practical is the Chapter?
• Chapter ten represents a summary of
information generated from chapter one to
nine.
• It provides disaggregated information with
respect to Supply, Use and value added
components
• Disaggregated information has been
provided in a systematic, constructive &
practical manner
How applicable is the Chapter to
countries in Africa
• SUT provides the essential foundation for
estimation of GDP and hence IOT in a
systematic, constructive and manner.
• Generally, African countries focus on GDP
without having SUT as its foundation.
• This situation is a barrier for estimation of
GDP with quality.
Applicability to Africa (cont.)
• Once SUT is understood in a systematic
and comprehensive manner, estimation of
GDP can be undertaken with very
minimum gaps, so that quality can be
improved.
• In fact, knowledge and understanding of
SUT in Africa should be improved.
• In this respect, this manual will be highly
relevant and useful.
Good practical examples/cases
in the Chapter 10
• Generally, all examples are practical, relevant &
hence understandable.
• Box 1, Commodity flow calculation for Poultry is
an outstanding example (page 20).
• The above claim can be made to Box 2 on page
22 (Tobacco).
• In fact, provision of examples is an attractive
feature of the Handbook, and hence it has
improved the quality and presentation.
• As a result, Handbook is highly user friendly.
Sources of Data
• It may be useful to add the following to the
content and sources of data to Chapter 10.
• With respect to Administrative data for utilities,
water should be added.
• As a source, Land utilization surveys provide
very useful data/information.
• In fact, land utilization data/information is the
foundation for many or almost economic
activities.
• Local & regional traditional authorities are useful
sources for data/information.
General Comments
• It may be useful at the beginning (chapter
one) to ask the question “what is SUT”.
• This is useful for the reader to understand
the purpose or objective of SUT.
• It may be useful to provide an introduction
at the beginning of each chapter.
• As example, if chapter 10 had an
introduction, it would have been very
useful and relevant.
General comments (cont.)
• It is essential to insert a table of
abbreviation.
• As example, PART 1 on page 7 has ICP
• In fact, “experts” know what it is.
• But Handbook of this nature is not only for
“experts” of the subject, but also for
others.
• National accounts can become a popular
subject through SUT.
General Comments (cont.)
• Provide an example on how PPP is calculated
and how it is used in SUT.
• Provide numerical values starting from basic
price to purchaser price on page 41 for better
understanding.
• Production and expenditure approaches of SUT
are clear, but not income approach (page 13).
General Comments (cont.)
• This is a very useful chapter because GDP
is an endeavor to take account of all
economic activities undertaken.
• However, this Handbook is about SUT,
but only section 214 (page 82) contains
reference to SUT.
• It may be useful to present chapter 9 with
a heading referencing to SUT.
