Math Activity 5 – Mean, Median
& Mode
How to find
Mean, Median & Mode
When given several numbers, stats, or figures,
you may be asked to find the most common
using one of these methods:
Mean
Mean – Add all the numbers and divide the sum
by the number of items. This is sometimes called
finding the AVERAGE.
EX: 4, 6, 18, 32, 27, 5, 12
Add the numbers
4+6+18+32+27+5+12 = 104
104/7 = 14.86 (rounded to 15)
Median
Median – The value in the middle of a sequential
set of values. Put all the numbers in order from
smallest to biggest, count the number of items,
divide by 2, count over to that place in the items. If
the answer is an even number the answer is the
average of the two numbers.
EX: 4, 6, 18, 32, 27, 5, 12
Reorder: 4, 5, 6, 12, 18, 27, 32
There are 7 numbers so split them
evenly 4, 5, 6 12
18, 27, 32
If there are an even number of items, add the
two middle ones together and divide by 2
Mode
Mode – The item that occurs most often in a
set of values.
EX: 4, 6, 18, 32, 27, 18, 5, 12, 18, 32,
1. Reorder: 4, 5, 6, 12, 18, 18, 18, 27, 32, 32
2. Find the item that repeats most often
4, 5, 6, 12, 18, 18, 18, 27, 32, 32
3. Your Mode is 18
What is Gross Domestic
Product (GDP)?
Gross Domestic Product
Components
Economists compute a statistic that shows the value,
in money, of all goods and services produced in a
country.
Consumer Spending – money that you and other
consumers spend to buy goods and services.
Government Spending – money spent by federal,
state, and local governments on anything from office
supplies to road construction to aircraft carriers
Net Exports – spending by foreigners who buy US
goods (exports) minus spending by US consumers on
foreign goods (imports)
Do the math of GDP
GDP = C + I + G + X – M
(C = consumer spending, I = investment
spending, G = government spending, X =
exports, and M = imports)
Figuring % of increase or decrease
% of change = difference / original
GDP per capita = GDP / population
Don’t forget to round appropriately
Figuring Total Quantity
Total Quantity = # of items per container X # of containers
EX: You have 45 cartons of eggs. Each carton holds
12 eggs. How many eggs to you have in total?
12 eggs per container X 45 containers = 540 eggs
Production Per Hour
Production Per Hour = Total Output / Total Hours
EX: You deliver 90 newspapers in 3 hours
Production per hour = 90 / 3
30 papers per hour
