• Dominant mode of transport for freight

• Carries 87% and 61% of passenger and freight

• Grew at 11% CAGR (1951-2004)
• 80% are personalized vehicles
• Share of buses reduced from 11% (1951) to 1%

• Connect all major centers of production

• 12% are four laned

• Upgradation and maintenance done by state
