Standardization in India

Organized standardization activity in India
started with establishment of Indian
Standards Institution (ISI) in 1947.

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) took over
work of ISI through enactment of BIS Act
(1986) by the Indian Parliament.
Core Activities
 Standards Formulation
 Certification
• Product
• Management Systems
• Registration Scheme
• Scheme for Foreign Manufacturers
• Hallmarking of Precious Articles
 Testing and Calibration
 National Institute of Training

SCOPE - ‘To formulate Indian Standards for terminology and
specifications for thermosetting & thermoplastic resins-bonded &
moulding materials, natural & synthetic polymers, synthetic resin
bonded laminates, thermoplastic films & sheets, plasticizers,
cellular plastics, finished plastic articles, composites & reinforced
plastics (excluding sanitary wares, plastic pipes for water supply
and plastics packaging), safety of toys and natural & synthetic
adhesives (excluding for plywood industry and electrical tapes).

IS 14534 ‘Guidelines for the recovery and recycling of
plastics waste’
IS 14535 ‘Recycled plastics for the manufacturing of
products – Designation’

IS 14534 referred in Plastic Waste
(Management and Handling) Rules, 2011
IS 14534 Guidelines for the Recovery and
Recycling of Plastics Waste

The standard is based on ISO 15270: 2008 on the subject
with modifications to suit Indian needs.
 Prescribes guidelines for the selection, segregation and
processing of plastics waste/scrap.
 Establishes the different options for the recovery of
plastics waste arising from pre-consumer and postconsumer sources.
 Establishes the quality requirements that should be
considered in all steps of the recovery process.
 Lists typical suggested end-products using appropriate
types of recycled/reprocessed plastics waste/scrap.

 This
standard also prescribes guidelines to the
manufacturers of plastic products with regard to
the marking to be used on the finished product in
order to facilitate identification of the basic raw
material.
 It helps in identifying whether the material used
on the end product is virgin, recyclate or a blend
of virgin and recyclate.
 These identification marking of plastics are
referred in the Plastic Waste (Management and
Handling) Rules, 2011 for compliance.

IS 14535 Recycled Plastics for Manufacturing of
Products - Designation
It is intended for identification and classification of the
recycled plastic material on the basis of its properties and
applications.
 It applies to recycled Plastic materials ready for normal use
without any further modifications.
 The designation system consists of 8 blocks to classify
them which uses combination of numerals and alphabets to
identify them

New Initiatives
Development of New Standards on
characterization of various plastic
recyclates, plastics recycling traceability
and assessment of conformity and
recycled content.
 These standards will help in effective
recycling of plastics.
