Patent Liability Analysis
 The sellable product of the electricivic is the motor drive
system, not the car, motor, batteries, etc.
 Patent infringement possibility limited to power electronic
circuitry and software algorithms used.
 Two possible infringements by doctrine of equivalents, one
literal infringement.
oResult of 30 minute search – probably other patents.
oOnly US patents searched
3
Parallel Switching with Phase Shift
 Excerpt from design notebook:
o “When multiple currents are added in parallel with a phase shift, the
high frequency components partially cancel, and a very sharp
current can be produced.”

Parallel Switching with Phase Shift
5
Parallel Switching with Phase Shift
 Independent claims of U.S. Pat. 5,563,780
•The electricivic drive is a current source, not a voltage source.
•No literal infringements
6
Load Current Sharing of Parallel IGBTs
 Excerpt from design notebook:
o “In order to reduce complexity and cost, only one sixth of each
phase current will be monitored. Physics should help keep the six
legs balanced.”

Load Current Sharing of Parallel IGBTs
 Independent claims of U.S. Pat. 6,084,790
Claim #1->
Claim #4->
No literal infringements
9
Hysteresis Circuit Timing
 As the motor AC voltage changes, so does the switching
frequency.
 Hysteresis band modified to maintain constant frequency
and equal (60 degree) shift between all inductors.

Hysteresis Circuit Timing
 Literal infringement…
