SCOPE OF THE INVENTION
• This invention aims at producing a circumferential
spark in the combustion chamber of a typical spark
ignition engine.
• Producing a circumferential spark doesn’t require
any additional devices inside the combustion
chamber, the function of producing a spark is
integrated within the piston
• By producing a circumferential spark it is expected
to increase the combustion efficiency and thereby
reducing the exhaust emissions.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
• This invention makes use of the theories and principles of conventional
spark plugs used in spark ignition(gasoline engines). The conventional
spark plug has a major two components 1.the main electrode, 2.the
ground electrode.
• Conventional spark plug works on the
principle of electric discharge.
• The phenomenon of electric discharge is, when an
electrode carrying suitable high voltage current
(main electrode) is brought nearer to another
conductor which is grounded(ground electrode)
within certain gap(arc gap) the air in-between the
main electrode and ground electrode gets ionized
and electric discharge takes place thus producing
a electric spark which ignites the air-fuel mixture
in an engine.
WORKING OF PICSI
•In piston integrated circumferential
spark
ignition technology the same
phenomenon of electric discharge is
used.
• But here the main electrode is a
circular copper ring which is seated
on the piston head. The ground
electrode is the engine cylinder wall
which is electrically grounded.
•Suitable insulation coating is
provided in-between the PICSI
electrode and piston body so that no
grounding occurs for the
main(PICSI) electrode.
•The PICSI electrode is powered by
electric lines through the piston.
DESCRIPTION
•
During the operation of the engine, when the PICSI electrode is powered by
the ignition coil, high voltage current is supplied to the PICSI electrode[it is to
be noted that the PICSI electrode is prevented from grounding to the piston
body, by providing a insulation layer in-between the PICSI electrode and
piston body]. And a spark occurs in-between the PICSI electrode and the
cylinder wall(grounded). This spark occurs throughout the piston
circumference. And also this spark only occurs in the region were the gasoline
charge meets the piston head.(not throughout the piston-cylinder wall
clearance gap).
WHY PICSI IS THE PROMISING FUTURE OF
SPARK IGNITION TECHNIQUE?

A Circumferential spark produces large quantity of spark which helps to burn
all the charge in the combustion chamber completely.
By achieving better combustion a high torque and thereby a better power and
be extracted from the engine.
Increased quantity of spark helps in better combustion from which exhaust
emissions can be reduced.
The level of unburnt fuel, and carbon monoxide is expected to decrease with
PICSI technology.
PICSI should be a promising spark ignition technology for GDI and TFS-i
engines, where the air-fuel mix is good at the bottom of combustion
chamber(near the piston head). So PICSI which produces spark at the piston
head will lead to a better combustion in GDI and TFS-i engines.
PICSI can be a promising technology for two stroke engines which normally
suffer to meet the emissions norms of many countries.
PICSI can be coupled with conventional spark plug ignition to achieve better
flame propagation in engines.
This technology will increase the compactness of engine by eliminating
protruding spark plugs.
