Status of the pulsed converters upgrade for
Linac3 100ms operation

Requirements for 100ms operation: pulsed quadrupoles
•
The limitation for 100ms operation is the charging capability of the capacitor charger: the
capacitor bank has to be charged from 350V to 600V (worst case) in ~80ms to allow
100ms repetition rate.

with quadrupole type 9 and Iref=320A

The installed capacitor chargers have a charging power of 1kJ/s with Vout=1000V and
have to be replaced by units with 1.5kJ/s charging power.

A commercial unit is available on the market with characteristics (charging power,
mechanical dimensions, control interface, etc…) fulfilling our request.
•
A Price Enquiry has been released and the order has been placed in May 2015 for the units
that were targeted.
•
In July, the supplier (TDK USA) has provided a similar unit (same mechanical dimensions)
to allow the studies for the integration in the power crate.
•
A MAXIDISCAP prototype converter has been modified to embed the new capacitor
chargers (modification of the capacitor bank layout, auxiliary power supply, front panel,
etc..).

The documentation for converter modification has been finalized by DEM (drawing office)
and production files released (EDA-03294–V1 “MAXIDISCAP 10Hz”).
•
The mechanical and electrical parts needed for power crates modification are currently
being ordered.

In September 2015, the 12 capacitor chargers units from TDK have been delivered at
CERN.
•
Tests have been performed to validate the electrical performances and the control
interface with the existing MIL-1553 electronic crate. Results are ok with some margins.

A MAXIDISCAP power converter equipped with a 1.5kJ/s charger unit has been operated at
10Hz during one week without any problem.

Conversion to 100ms operation of the pulsed quadrupoles

• the modification of the pulsed quadrupoles for 100ms operation is progressing as
expected.
