Explain the terms ‘conjugated polymer’.
Conjugated polymer means the
polymer consists carbon chain
with C=C double bond and
C-C single bond in alternate
sequence.
Give two reasons that scientists suspect
polyacetylene would conduct electricity.
(1) Polyacetylene so formed is a silvery
film and shines like a metal.
(2) The pi-electrons of C=C double bonds
would delocalize into the C-C single bonds
and hence could move freely through the
whole carbon chain.
Give two reasons that ‘conjugated
polymer’ can be used in TV screens.
• ‘Conjugated polymer’ can be made as a
semiconductor and
• ‘Conjugated polymer’ exhibits electroluminescence, it glows when a voltage passes
through.
