TAKS Review
Let’s get started with…
Differences between
convection,
conduction, and
radiation
Convection, Conduction and Radiation
1. Convection
-the transfer of heat by warmed matter.
-occurs between liquids and gases.
-heat moves in fluid motion
Examples: steam from a coffee
cup, warmth from a fire, and
warm air rising
Convection, Conduction and Radiation
2. Conduction
- the transfer of energy from particle to
particle
- occurs between solids
Examples: spoon in hot cup of
soup becoming warmer, touching
the stove and metal feeling cold
Convection, Conduction, and Radiation
3. Radiation
-Electromagnetic waves transporting
energy through space.
-Sunlight transfers waves
Examples: feeling warmth from
the sun and light from a light bulb

Now let’s talk
about energy…
Energy
Renewable Energy

Energy
Renewable Energy
Advantages
- produce few pollutants
Disadvantages
- variable amounts of energy
- need continuous input (sunlight,
wind, running water)
Energy
Nonrenewable Energy
Can not be replenished in short amount of time
Nuclearsplitting atoms

Natural Gasunder pressure a

Oil- formed from
remains of plants
Coal-and

Energy
Nonrenewable Energy
Advantages
- energy can be used around the
clock
Disadvantages
- produces pollutants
- take millions of years to reproduce

Now let’s talk
about waves…
Waves
Waves are the means by which
energy is transferred from one
point to another
There are two types of waves:
transverse and longitudinal
Waves
Parts of a Wave
Distance

two
points
Frequency- the number
wave that pass a point
in a second
the height of the wave
Waves
The Wave Equations
Waves
Wave Movement
Reflection: bounce off a surface
Refraction: bend through an object
Diffraction: waves wrapping around an edge
Waves
Wave Movement
Resonance: vibrations caused by waves
Polarization: filters block out certain
wavelengths and allow only certain waves
through

Circuits
Circuits have different components:
Wire
Switch
Bulb
Power
Source
Circuits
When the power is turned on the current
flows from the positive to negative end of
the battery.
Circuits
Series Circuit
Series Circuits are the simplest form of
circuits.
If the path is broken, no current will flow.
–example: Christmas tree lights
Circuits
Parallel Circuit
Parallel circuits have more than one way
for current to flow.
If the path is broken, current will still flow.
