AMPTEC 601ES Explosive Safety Safety DMM –
Startup Check Out Procedure
The first item to examine is to check the calibration sticker due date for the
AMPTEC 601ES Explosive Safety DMM. If the due date is still valid and not
expired, it Is ready to begin the safety check procedure. If the calibration due
date is expired then contact your calibration laboratory or AMPTEC RESEARCH.
A tamper resistant calibration sticker is usually located around the perimeter area
to the AMPTEC 601ES DMM covering one of the calibration access screws.
AMPTEC 601ES Explosive Safety Safety DMM –
Startup Check Out Procedure
Step 1: Procedure for turning on the 601ES DMM –
Using main operating power switch.
POWER
ON
OFF
Hold down the “POWER ON” switch ~ (2) seconds
for power “ON”. The 601ES automatically turns “OFF”
after (30) minutes of idle use to conserve battery power.
Step 2: Observe the 601ES DMM display after unit is “powered
up”. There should be no low battery (“LO BAT”) indicator present
in the LCD display. ( see red circle area below)
The “LO BAT” display means it is
time to replace the unit’s “AA”
batterries. ( shown without backlight)
Since no “LO BAT” is displayed means,
it means the unit’s batterries are OK.
( display shown with backlight lit mode )
The 601ES DMM is capable of
indicating : “A” for amperes, “V”
for voltage, , “k” for Kilo, “Ω ” for
ohms. When the display
indicates “>>> OR” or Overrange
mode – it means possible “open
circuit connection” or a higher
range selection is required.
Step 3: Place the unit in “2 wire” measurement mode to begin the self
check. (make sure that the 2 wire / 4 wire switch is in the the “up”
position).

Step 4: The next set of steps envolves checking (by viewing the analog
milliammeter) each range and function to see that less than 0.005 A ( or 5 mA)
is ever output from any FUNCTION or selected range, into the unit’s onboard
analog milliammeter.
2 sections of the AMPTEC 601ES DMM are used for this process.
The FUNCTION/RANGE section and the on-board analog
milliammeter.

PRESS TO MEASURE
If the unit has successfully completed all the steps indicated it is ready to use.
This concludes the AMPTEC 601ES Explosive Safety DMM check out procedure.
1. Calibration/Maintenance access screws
sealed with tamper resistance calibration
sticker (see red arrow).
2. Purge Valve - Automatic Air Pressure
Equalization
3. Handles - See item #1, only lift for calibration access.
4. Power “On/Off ” switch, silicon rubber boot
covered, operates on 4 “AA” batteries (alkaline or NiMH). Automat- ically turns “OFF”
after (30) min. of in-activity. Located near
shoulder of handle to avoid accidental power
turn ON.
5. Protection Fuse (5.0 amp fast blow type)
protects the 2.0 ampere Stray Current Range
(measurement). The type of fuse used is a
Little Fuse 3AG or equivalent.
6. 20,000 count LCD Displaywith ( A) amps,
(V ) voltage,
( ) Ohms, (k ) kilo symbols plus (>>>OR )
overrange indicator if a range’s magnitude is
exceeded.
6A. The LCD Displaywill indicate "LO
BAT" when it is time to replace the batteries.
Replace (4) ea. “AA” batteries with a heavy
duty 1.5 V Alkaline i.e. Duracell Ultra, or
rechargeable Energizer 2500 mAHr 1.2V
Nickel Metal Hydride rechargeable or equivalent.
7. Display Backlight is push button activated
(dim ambient light areas). Note: Use sparingly
to conserve battery power.
8. Meter Test Lead Input Jacks - For two
wire test lead connections, you should usethe
far left input jacks both
VHI and VLO, shown as a dotted box. Use
these two terminals V HI and VLO for all voltage, current and simple ohms measurements.
The “4 Wire” switch position and terminals are
only for 4 Wire Kelvin resistance measurements.
9. Zero. 'Short' the test lead ends prior to
adjustment of the Zero knob only for resistance measurements. Readjust of the Zero
knob is only needed if connections are
changed. This is a precision 10 turn pot with
delicate stops at both ends (i.e. used with 2
Wire 2 ohm, 20ohm and 200 ohm ranges).
10. Case or Chassis Ground Jack is connected to the
meter’s internal Faraday Cage, metal top plate and the
unit’s bottom plate (an accessible chassis to earth
ground connection).
11. RMS AC/DC Voltage Measurement : 600.0V,
200.0V, 20.0 V & 2.0 VRMS AC/DC (i.e. 0.0500
VRMS measurement on the 2.0 VRMS range - 4 ½
digit resolution).
12. Stray Current Press To Measure - To measure
AC/DC current, connect input and output wires from
the UUT to the far left 2 terminals ( VHI V
/ LO
inputs). Connect to the “UUT”. Depress and Hold
the Stray Current button. A 5.0 ampere fuse protects
the meter from current > than 5 amps.
13. 0 to 10 mA DC Analog Milliammeter measures
DC current output levels with the "Press to
Measure” button. To test the AMPTEC 601ES
resistance function's test current level select the
resistance range ( rotary knob) and press the
milliammeter's "Press to Measure " button.
14. AMPTEC 601ES Safety DMM Resistance
Ranges include a 2.0 Ohm range with 0.1 milliohm
resolution, 20.0 Ohm, 200 Ohm, 2.0 KOhm and 20
KOhm ranges.
15. The Signal Source function is used to verify
DVM voltage measurement (i.e. the2.0 V range) and
stray current measurement at low levels. Select the
2.0 V Range. Depress and hold the signal source
button. The display should indicate approx. 0.0500 V
( around 50 mV ). Next, select the 2 AMP range.
Depress and hold the Signal Source button along
with the Stray Current button. The display should
indicate approx. 0.0050 amperes ( ~ 5 mA ).
16. Flip Latch - Place palm on the lid corner. Press
while flipping up the latch to open the AMPTEC
601ES DMM.
