PEDAL POWER
Don’t be scared if you here a beep, this is the
”SISSY” alarm telling us that the DC to AC inverter
inside the box isn’t receiving enough power.
This happens when you aren't pedaling hard enough!
The Magic UFO Ball
1.
Pick up the ball and touch both metal contacts to one
finger.
2. Using a finger from each of your hands, touch both
metal contacts.
3. What’s happening? Think about electricity and what
is required for it to “flow”.
4. Have another person touch one contact while you
touch the other (Without touching each other). What
happened?
5. Have another person touch one contact while you
touch the other one. Now touch the other person
(anywhere where there is bare skin). What happened
this time?
Questions:
•
Why does it only work when touching bare skin?
•
How many people can you “chain” together before it
doesn’t work anymore?
Hand Generated Power

Pick up hand generator
Crank the handle. What happened?
Now crank the handle as fast as you can. How did
the speed impact the brightness of the bulb?
Connect the multimeter (black box w/ lcd display) to
the alligator clips on the generator (red to red & black
to black) Set it to 20 under the DC Voltage (labeled
V….)
Crank the generator. How much voltage is
produced? Crank faster, what was your peak
voltage?
Crank faster, what was your peak voltage? Write
down your highest volatge on te table. See who can
generate the most energy.
Try hooking up other things like the motor or music
box. Observe what happens when you crank faster.
The Human Battery
1.
Has anyone ever told you that you are like the
energizer bunny? Turns out you have a lot more in
common than you think.
2. The human body is like a battery. Think about it…
What makes our hart beat? What travels through our
body to make you move your toes? ELECTRICITY!
3. The human body produces anywhere form 10 to 100
millivolts of energy. (an electric eel can produce as
much as 600 volts)
4. Check yours by simply turning on the red multimeter
(yellow switch) and pressing a probe into each
thumb. (make sure the multimeter is set to the 2000m
under the DC Voltage setting (labeled by V…)
Questions:
•
Why does it only work when touching bare skin?
•
Does the number stay the same? Why would it
change?
Pedal Power- Competition
The human body has lots of stored energy ready for use at a
moments notice. Lets see who has the most.
Bouncing Ball:
1.You will need two riders. Flip the “Ball” switch for both
riders.
2.Count to 3 and then peddle. See who can get there ball to
the top the fastest and then see who can keep it there.
The Cool Off:
1.Flip the ball switches off. Turn on both riders’ “light”
switches and also the AC Plug switch.
2.One at a time see how fast and how long it takes to power
the fan.
See if you can power everything by your self. Next, try it with a buddy
Pedal Power- Bulb Power
1. Make sure your rider “lights” switch is on.
2. Turn on Bulb 1 – This is an LED (Light Emitting Diode)
Bulb. How hard is it to pedal on a 1-5 scale?
3. Turn off Bulb 1 and turn on Bulb 2 – This is CFL (Compact
Fluorescent Bulb). How hard is it to pedal now on a 1-5
scale?
4. Turn off Bulb 2 and turn on Bulb 3 – This is a standard
40watt incandescent bulb. How hard is it to pedal now on a
1-5 scale?
5. Which bulb do think requires less energy? Why?
6. Now, turn off Bulb 3 and turn on the AC plug switch (with
the green fan plugged in). Start pedaling.
7. Have a friend start flipping on and then off each bulb.
• What happened each time each light was switched “on”?
Wich bulb had the largest impact on your pedaling?
• Which kind of bulb would you prefer to have in your
home?
