Extension Cord Safety
•
A cord not marked for outdoor use is to be used indoors
only
•
Inspect cord before each use. Do not use if damaged.
Repair or replace cord. Damaged cords can cause
short circuits, shocks, or fires.
•
Keep away from water. Do not use when wet.
•
If plugging one cord into another – verify conductor size
matches and voltage drop is adequate. If unsure,
consult with electrically skilled person.
•
Avoid overheating. Verify that cord is rated to operate
the connected device.
•
Always unplug when not in use. Do not unplug by
pulling on cord. Grab plug on cord end to remove.

Extension Cord Safety
•
Modifying the cord plug prevents safe operation of
the connected device.
•
Do not bend or modify any metal prongs of cord
end.
•
A ground assurance test shall be
performed on cords when not
used with GFCI/RCD to verify it’s
integrity.
Do you think it is safe to use this outlet box???
DOW RESTRICTED
Power Tool Safety
•
Inspect the tool before use. Are there damaged
cords, loose or broken switches, modified plug end?
Do not use a tool that has been modified or had the
plug modified.
•
Electric powered tools should be used with a
GFCI/RCD or have a ground assurance test.
Is this tool grounded??
Verify that tool is grounded or labeled as double insulated.

Power Tool Safety
PPE?
•
Do not alter or remove safety guards and
wear the appropriate PPE (Personal
Protective Equipment).
•
Store tools is a dry environment.
•
Do not carry tool by the cord, keep cord
away from sharp edges or moving parts.
It’s wet outside. Is a GFCI/RCD being used?
DOW RESTRICTED
Dow’s Electrical Safe Work Standard for Portable Electrical
Equipment
1.
Portable electrical equipment must meet one of the following requirements:
A.
Be included in an annual* inspection and testing program (ground assurance), or
B.
Be used with a GFCI/RCD
2.
The annual* test and inspection must be performed by an Electrical Skilled or Instructed person.
3.
The annual* test and inspection must address the following:
A.
A visual inspection of the plug prongs for looseness, missing parts, or bent parts.
B.
A visual inspection of the insulation for cuts, missing, worn, cracked, abraded, or other defects
C. Verification that the equipment ground conductor is intact or labeled as double insulated
D. For portable equipment that is not used with a GFCI (RCD), continuity of the equipment grounding conductor and neutral
shall be measured. A minimum of ten (10) amperes of current with an approved test set must be passed through the
equipment-grounding conductor to verify its integrity. A maximum of 0.5 ohm is an acceptable test value at the 10 amp test
current
E.
A visual inspection for mechanical defects
F.
A run test
G. Attachment of an annual inspection tag
4.
Any deficiencies shall be repaired by an Electrical Skilled or Instructed Person before the annual* inspection tag is attached and
the equipment is returned to service.
