Part 3: Smart Metering
Metering
 Definition Metering:
•
Metering refers the continuous measuring of physical values at intervals
of a special defined time duration
•
KNX examples for measurement
-
Electrical Power in P
Electrical energy consumption in W
Room temperature in T
Humidity in %
Wind speed in m/s
Gas consumption in m³
Water consumption in m³
Heat consumption in kWh
…
 KNX can measure all physical values in buildings

Definition of Smart Metering
 …in terms of the general understanding:
„Smart Metering“ is often related to the metering of electrical power. In
comparison to normal electric meters, which count only the energy
consumption (in kWh), Smart Meter devices measure additionally the
electrical loads (in kW) special intervals.“
 …in terms of payroll relevant metering:
„Smart Metering describes the process to send measured values of e.g.
gas, water, heat, power to the utility in regular recurring time intervals for
time depending payroll processes (multi level tariffs)“
 …in terms of control-systems:
„Smart Metering describes the measurement of physical values in order to
implement control-systems“

Example payroll relevant metering:
Clearance of time-dependend electricity tariffs
 Multi level electricity tariffs can‘t be billed without Smart Meter

KNX Control-Systems
Smart Metering is the precondition for any kind of controls
 Controller
•
•
A controller adapts an „actual value“ to a given „setpoint value“ and
reaches the „setpoint value“ preferably without a deviation between both
values
Example: A heating controller shall operate the heating in a way, that
the room temperature contains 23°C
 Control and metering task
•
•
•
•
KNX Association International
The „actual value“ must be measured with a „sensor“
The controller proceeds the deviation and controls an „actuator“
The „actuator“ starts an action
Example: A KNX thermostat (controller) measures the room
temperature with a KNX temperature sensor and controls a valve of the
heating system with a KNX electronic actuator

KNX ways of metering:
Direct and indirect metering
 Direct KNX meters
•
The meter includes a KNX interface
 Indirect KNX meters
•

KNX Electric meters:
for main power circuits
 Quantities to be measured:
•
•
Active power, reactive power, apparent power, voltage, current,
frequency, phase angle
Up to 80A per phase
 Intervalls of measurement and data forwarding:
•
•
KNX Association International
Intervall can be customized
Or: only if changes of the measured value occur

KNX electric sub meters:
for sub power circuits
 Quantities to be measured:
•
•
Active power, reactive power, apparent power, voltage, current,
frequency, phase angle
Up to 16A
 Intervalls of measurement and data forwarding:

KNX M-Bus metering
 M-Bus and KNX are compatible
 M-Bus meter data (only S-Mode) can be directly transmitted
to KNX via KNX RF by Multi utility gateways (MUCs)
 Wireless M-Bus and KNX RF telegrams can be understood
by the same MUC

Utility meters and KNX
Three possibilities how to read out utility meters
by KNX:
 KNX RF snap-on couplers
•
The meter can be read out via a KNX RF snap-on
coupler
 Customer interface of the utility meter
•
An optical KNX sensor reads out the meter
 MUC
•
KNX Association International
The utility meter is connected to a MUC via an optical
interface. The MUC provides the meter data to KNX
