EM3560 BACNET ENERGY METER
Schneider Electric
11
EM3560 – Native BACnet MS/TP
Has measurement capability comparable to
EM3550 (with logging added)
Key Differentiators from other BACnet meters:
● Native BACnet MS/TP protocol
● 115.2 kbaud serial communications
● Pulse Inputs for other Energy sensors
● Native Trend_Log objects (data logging)
● Local LCD Display & User Interface
What customer benefits do these provide?
Schneider Electric
12
12
Native BACnet MS/TP protocol
• Native - built into the meter – does not require a separate
gateway and power supply
• BACnet MS/TP – as compared to BACnet IP – most
meters that support BACnet only support BACnet IP
● Most customers WANT BACnet MS/TP rather than BACnet IP
– Adding a device with BACnet IP requires a separate network drop
on a particular subnet and a dedicated IP address – the installer
must request these from the customer’s IT group
– Adding a device with BACnet MS/TP can be done easily by the
installer using a shielded twisted pair that they can run themselves
● To get BACnet IP support, simply add a BACnet router to one or
more EM3560 Meters
Schneider Electric
13
13
115.2 kbaud Serial Comm
● A commonly requested feature on other BACnet
products is faster baud rate support
● A serial (MS/TP) link with multiple devices can only
operate as fast as the slowest device
● Many BACnet system builders prefer to operate
their serial links at 76.8 kbaud
● The EM3560 supports this and also adds 115.2
kbaud
Schneider Electric

Pulse Inputs for other Energy
sensors
● The Modbus protocol is heavily used by Energy Management systems.
● Pulse outputs on Modbus EM355x models let BAS/BMS systems access
Energy Consumption while the Energy Management system utilizes the
full data set of a meter.
● Since BACnet is primarily used by BAS/BMS systems, the need for
additional output is not common.
● BAS/BMS systems that monitor energy consumption want to see all
forms energy consumption
● Electrical
● Natural Gas
● Hot Water
● Chilled Water
● Steam
● The EM3560 provides 2 pulse inputs with accumulators (energy
counters) that can be connected to simple flow sensors with pulse
outputs, and make their accumulated energy readings available via
BACnet.
Schneider Electric
15
15
Native Data Logging
●Some system designs specify local storage of measurement history
on device
●Can be recovered later if local controller or communication link fails
●Customers can always set up external Trend Logs on local
controllers, but they only store when the local controllers and
communication link are operating
●EM3560 has three native Trend log objects
● Each stores up to 5760 time-stamped records (60 days at 15 min intervals)
● Log interval is tied internally to demand interval
● Each object can be pointed to any of the 52 Data values
● Timestamps do rely on our real-time clock, which does not have a battery
backup
●Software must generate a BACnet Time_Synchronization event when EM3560 power is
restored
●An alarm bit (Binary_Object) is provided to indicate if this is needed
Schneider Electric
16
16
LCD Display & User Interface
●Simplifies setup & commissioning
●Enter or view the Device ID directly
●Set up Comm parameters
●Many MS/TP products require a PC, special cables,
custom software, etc.
