The Enlightenment
The Enlightenment was an eighteenth century
movement in Western Philosophy. The term can
more narrowly refer to the intellectual movement
of The Enlightenment, which advocated reason
as the primary basis of authority. Developing in
France, Britain and Germany, its sphere of
influence also included Austria, Italy, the
Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Scandinavia, Spain
and, in fact, the whole of Europe. The
Enlightenment is generally agreed to have ended
around the year 1800 and the beginning of the
Napoleonic Wars.

Influences
We know that Kant was influenced by The
Englightenment and his Christian Faith. What
has influenced you? Have a brief ‘out of body’
experience and throw yourself forward in time by
150 years. Imagine now you are a renowned
thinker. If someone was writing a book about
you, what would they say were your early
influences? Be prepared to share your thoughts
with the rest of the class.
