In what ways can duty be seen as
the basis of ethical decision
making?
• Duty according to Kant
• Categorical – what can
is the idea that if a moral
action can be shown to
be a universal law we
ought to do it
• Duty lays stress on
obligation to do what is
morally right
• Doing the right thing is a
categorical imperative
be clearly shown to be
right
• Imperative –there is a
duty to do what is right
• Duty is worked out by
using reason
• Reason shows what is a
universal law
Example of Categorical Imperative
‘Honesty is the best policy’ can be shown through
reason to be a Categorical Imperative (universal law)
as it is clear that without honesty society would break
down and lack cohesion, trust and law and order.
Honesty therefore becomes the duty everyone must
pursue.
