Major Question
How do Koreans and Americans value honesty?
Why do we ask this question?
Literature Review I- Hoon
Ho (KIS)

http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v464/n7288/full/464490a.html
Moral Superiority -> unethical actions
People would break moral action to get ahead in life
(economical competition)
ex) College students (explanation)
-> People would take our money and get benefit in life.
Literature Review II - Dean

How Japanese people are more likely bring lost items
to lost & found -> may relate to Korea.
How honest people seems more dishonest while
speaking the truth -> can predict how people react
when we approach.
Literature Review - Kelsey
(UHS)
Young children are more likely to stick to original
moral value, more likely to be dishonest if expected
punishment is mild -> experiment that we will perform
doesn’t include any punishment.
People in Confucian culture values adhering to
standards -> Koreans will be more likely to stay
honest.
Hypothesis
•
If Koreans and Americans are tested with honesty,
then Koreans will more likely to stay honest, while
Americans are more likely to succumb to their
temptation.
Why?
•
•
Confucianism: Ethical and philosophical system
developed in China, eventually spreading to the East
Asia.
The idea of conformity would make Korean more likely
to maintain their moral values.
How?
•
•
On a busy street, give small amount of money (range
50 cent to 5 dollar) to people and tell them that they
dropped it. How many would be honesty of the owner
of the money? (50 subjects, 4~7 p.m.)
Source: “Democracy and Confucian Values”
Research Method
Ask a person from back: “Did you drop this money?”
This is an easy yet accurate method. People are not
aware whether they are tested, and asking single
question would not cause suspicion.
Potential Research Flaws
1. People could just ignore us.
2. It could depend on people's social status. If a
person is rich, he or she would say, "No, it is not
mine." However, if a person is poor, the person would
say, "Yes, it is mine."
3. Which direction we come from.
4. The amount of money would be important.
5. The situation a man or female is in.
6. If they actually lost the money.
Data Collection
Data
Illinois
Seoul
People who took money in
Coex
Analysis- Findings
More males tend to take the money than women
Less Koreans took the money than the Americans
About half of the female in United States took the
money, where only one female took the money in
Korea
Younger people tend to take more money
Most of people just said, “no” before searching their
wallet.
Analysis- Hypothesis
The data does support our thesis -> If Koreans and
Americans are tested with honesty, then Koreans will
more likely to stay honest, while Americans are more
likely to succumb to their temptation.
More American dishonesty claimed money...
Analysis- Accuracy
Not 100%
Since there was a busy place, more of middle class
workers (rich) were our subjects -> took less money
Larger amount of could have made people say “Yes
more” -> large amount of money is more appealing
There was actually a person who lost money -> we
forgot to consider if there was going to be anyone
who dropped their money.
Analysis- Significance
Koreans value Confucianism manner by being
honest.
Americans would do things to achieve economical
advantage.
Americans are more self-centered, Koreans value
group.
Future Korean generations may resemble Americans.
Conclusion
Hypothesis was proven by both literature reviews and
actual experiment.
Experiment can be improved in several ways.
Some characteristics could be derived by the data
obtained.
